Carroll to play for Nets in summer league

LOGAN -- Former Utah State guard Jaycee Carroll will play for the New Jersey Nets in the Orlando and Salt Lake City summer leagues.

Carroll was an honorable mention AP All-America selection and Western Athletic Conference player of the year after leading the nation in 3-point shooting at 49.8 percent as a senior. He was not picked in the NBA draft last week.

Carroll is one of 16 players on the Nets' summer league roster. The Nets will play four games in the Orlando from July 7-11, then come to Utah for the Rocky Mountain Revue for three games.

Two Utah Flash players will also play in the Orlando summer league. Utah Flash point guard Kevin Kruger will play for the Orlando Magic summer league team in the 2008 Orlando Pro Summer League at the RDV Sportsplex July 7-11 in Orlando. This is the second consecutive summer that Kruger has played for the Magic summer league squad.

Kruger played in 49 games for the Flash this past season, averaging 38.2 minutes, 13.3 points and 7.1 assists. He tied the NBA Development League record for three-pointers made in a game with 10 at Idaho on March 29. The first player selected by the Flash in the 2007 D-League Draft, Kruger was fourth in the league in assists per game (7.1).

The 15-game event will feature summer league entries from the Magic, Chicago, Indiana, Miami, New Jersey and Seattle.

Another Flash player, forwrad Brian Hamilton, will play for the New Jersey Nets summer league team in the Orlando camp. Hamilton, who led the NBA Development League in total steals (115) and steals per game (2.3) played in 49 games for the Flash this past season, averaging 31.1 minutes, 10.8 points and 5.6 rebounds.

Wrestling

Kids wrestling championship at UVU

The UVU McKay Event Center will be host of the Asics USA wrestling Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships, which runs Wednesday through Saturday. More than 1,000 of the nation's best youth wrestlers ages 9-14 will descend on Orem for the most prestigious wrestling event for this age group. All will compete for a national championship.

"This is the Little League World Series for youth wrestling," said Cole Kelley, the tournament director.

On Wednesday there will be rules clinic and social for officials and tournament workers as actual wrestling competition will begin Thursday with the Greco-Roman tournament. On Friday the Freestyle tournament will begin with the championship finals set for Saturday. A parade of competitors will take place on the morning of July 4 at 8:25 a.m.

Longtime college coach Pont dies at 80

OXFORD, Ohio -- John Pont, who guided Indiana to its only Rose Bowl appearance 40 years ago and also coached at Northwestern, Yale and Miami of Ohio, died Tuesday. He was 80.

Officials at Miami said Pont died at his home in Oxford, Ohio. Pont had been fighting cancer.

Pont coached the Hoosiers from 1965 to 1972. In 1967, Indiana was 9-2 and represented the Big Ten Conference in the Rose Bowl, where the Hoosiers lost to Southern California.

Pont spent 13 years at Miami as a player, assistant coach and head coach. When he graduated, he was the school's career leading rusher with 2,457 yards, and he was Miami's first player to have his number retired.

WNBA

Mercury keep Atlanta winless

ATLANTA -- Diana Taurasi scored 28 points and the Phoenix Mercury used a strong second quarter to beat the winless Atlanta Dream 97-79 on Tuesday night.

The Mercury (8-7) have won four straight game to finish up a five-game road trip after losing to New York 105-72 on June 22. The defending WNBA champions lost four consecutive games to open the season.

Tangela Smith scored 17 points for the Mercury. Kelly Mazzante and Le'coe Willingham had 14 points apiece, and Kelly Miller had eight assists.

Betty Lennox scored 18 points and Jennifer Lacey added 16 for the expansion Dream (0-16), who extended their WNBA-record losing streak and are still seeking the first victory in franchise history. Tamera Young scored 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting and Kasha Terry had 11.

• Liberty 89, Sparks 78: At Los Angeles, Shameka Christon scored a career-high 28 points to help New York rally.

Janel McCarville added 15 points and tied a season best with eight rebounds for the Liberty (8-7). Cathrine Kraayeveld had 14 points, Leilani Mitchell scored 13 points and Loree Moore tied a career high with nine assists.

• Sun 78, Comets 68: At Uncasville, Conn., Lindsay Whalen had nine assists to set Connecticut's career record and scored 14 points to help the Sun overcome a 14-point deficit.

Asjha Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the Sun (13-5), who maintained the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Houston (7-9) played its third straight game without Olympian Tina Thompson, who has a broken left ring finger.

Matee Ajavon led Houston with 14 points. Michelle Snow had 11 points and Hamchetou Maiga-Ba had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sancho Lyttle had nine points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 4:33 left.

He WON!

The last few years he was loosing. With his new team he's in for some great success this year.
