Utah's unemployment insurance benefits extended -- If you've recently lost your job, and have nearly exhausted your state unemployment insurance benefits, hang in there.

On Monday, President Bush signed a bill into law that will extend unemployment insurance benefits nationwide by an additional 13 weeks. In Utah, the program is administered by the state Department of Workforce Services.

The maximum period for unemployment benefits in Utah is currently 26 weeks. With the 13-week extension, those who are eligible will receive up to 39 weeks of unemployment benefits, saidBill Starks, the state's unemployment insurance director.

Workforce Services is in the process of identifying unemployed Utah workers who may be eligible for the extension and will be sending letters to them in the next few days, Starks said. The extension takes effect for the week starting July 6, and those eligible may begin receiving their payments by mid-July.

"We are finishing the programming of our systems to begin taking these claims on or after July 15. Claims may be backdated to July 6, the effective date of the program. Generally, the maximum extended weeks of benefits is equal to one half the total amount received for regular unemployment insurance," he said.

To get more information or file a claim for unemployment insurance benefits on or after July 15, please visit jobs.utah.gov or call the claims center in Utah County at 375-4067.

Alpine gel components maker sold -- Sunshine Manufacturing LC, an Alpine-based maker of specialty gel components, was sold to Gaymar Industries, an Orchard Park, N.Y.-based medical solutions provider, company officials announced Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition will boost Gaymar's global work force to more than 500 workers. As part of the transaction, Gaymar, which is owned by private equity firm Nautic Partners LLC, also acquired a new license agreement that gives the company rights to new gel technologies and new medical mattress products.

It turns out those who believed Utah was immune from the housing crisis were wrong. I foresee a price correction coming soon as the inventory starts exceeding demand.
