FIRE OFFICIALS CONCERNED Print E-mail
Daily Herald

As the 4th of July holiday is upon us, the increase in outdoor activities is cause for concern with the hot and dry weather we're experiencing in central Utah. The risk of a large wildfire is much greater when fires started by people are added to lightning caused fires.

Fire Prevention Specialist Jill Ivie said "it's important that people using public lands go prepared and take precautions this holiday season."

When the risk of wildfires is greater, seemingly normal activities can turn dangerous. For example, fire causes in central Utah have included fireworks, a favorite activity for many during this holiday season.

Fireworks can turn from delight to deadly in one instant when a spark ignites the dry and sun-heated grass.

It's important to know that fireworks are NOT allowed on any federal or state lands in the State of Utah. Find out where and when fireworks can be used legally by contacting your local fire officials. The key to a safe holiday is to be prepared.

Take extra water, a fire extinguisher and a shovel to your celebration, camp out or other activity.

If you are found responsible for having started a wildfire, you may be liable for all suppression and reclamation costs. In a dangerous year like this, costs could be immense. Help your family have fun outdoors by using all types of fire safely.
