RESIDENT REACHES BIKING GOAL -- Eighty-year-old Highland resident Lloyd Guthrie, profiled in last week's Lone Peak Press, biked from American Fork to Cedar City last week. When he was at Brian Head he reported the ride was pretty brutal. "The wind was against us the entire time," he said, "We didn't have any flats or trouble though."

One of his traveling companions and organizer of the 280 mile ride John Jesse said, "He did great. He's sitting here eating half a pizza right now."

The Monday after he got home Guthrie was right back riding. "He went up to Suncrest this morning," his wife Claudine Guthrie said, "He might not do as long a ride again but now they are talking about going both north and south to the borders of Utah. They've been to Cedar City so we would probably ride down there and they would bike on to Mesquite from there."

Grant family meets with Alpine City Council to discuss road -- Developer Will Jones and Myrna Grant, Trustee of the Grant Family Trust went before the Alpine City Council to discuss the wording on an agreement which could stop a city road from going through the Grant property for more than 10 years. A road under the proposed agreement would not be built until 10 years after the first home in Alpine Canyon Estates is occupied.

"I'd feel more comfortable having a fixed date," Councilman Jim Tracy said. The purpose of the meeting with the council was to see if terms were agreeable to the council.

"You can't enter into a legislative agreement that binds future city councils," Alpine City attorney David Church said. No official decision was made.

Town Center park design recommended -- A two-acre park north of the new Highland city building is in the works. If approved it will include a wading stream coming off a waterfall to a splash fountain in the middle and on out to the other side. The stream will be about four inches deep. Zoning administrator Lonnie Crowell who helped design the park explained why the water features were put included. "Water has a been a big factor in Highland's history," he said.

A restroom is planned in the southwest area. Commissioner Elizabeth Macfarlane expressed concern about it. "Public restrooms are a magnet for predators," she said.

City administrator Barry Edwards reassured her.

"This will be close to the city building where windows look down on it from a second story," he said. "It is also close to the police station which will be a deterrent for predators. The park will also be closed two hours after sunset as all our parks are."

The park will be surrounded by a sidewalk and parking on the east and west sides. Commissioner Abe Day said he did not want the it to turn into a skateboard park and made a revised motion to prohibit skateboarding. The Planning Commission recommended a conditional use permit for the park on June 24 with the condition there will be no skateboarding but will allow community events such as concerts and farmer's markets. The cost is estimated to be about $1.3 million which will come out of the park bond. If approved the park could be finished by next spring.

"This park will be a place for people to just 'hang out' and for families to play," Edwards said.
