It's all in the name at Cooking Taste Right

Oh, forget about the funny name -- the cooking tastes fine at Cooking Taste Right in Provo.

And by cooking, we mean especially the fantastic frozen dessert they call Taiwan-style shaved ice. Four dollars gets you a large bowl filled with ice shavings covered in condensed milk, syrup and fresh fruit. It's large enough to share and the milk mixes with the ice to make something like vanilla ice cream in the center of the bowl. Trust us, it's better tasting (and probably better for you, with the fruit) than any slushy, icy beverage available on a street corner.

And you'll be in better surroundings, too. The dining area is quiet and clean, with your choice of booths, barstools or tables and chairs.

We were most impressed with the shaved ice, but Cooking Taste Right is a cafe and bakery, too. A glass case displays several types of cakes and pastries, or you can have one made to order however you like it. The menu features a selection of Chinese and Mongolian dishes, some familiar, some less so.

We liked the Mongolian Huushuur, which is a meat and vegetable filling wrapped in fried pastry dough, sort of like large wontons. The Huushuur came with a dark sauce for dipping and some vegetables on the side. The Mongolian Noodle Stir Fry was also tasty, but wasn't different from Chinese Lo Mein we've had elsewhere.

We also tried the Spicy Chicken, which was plenty mild, and the Sacha Chicken, which had a flavorful sauce. Both were served over rice and included a mix of white and dark meat. The presentation is nothing fancy (our meals came on paper plates) but the service was friendly and the cooking tasted right.

Cooking Taste Right also serves several teriyaki and lo mein dishes, as well as something called Chinese Style Spaghetti. The restaurant also serves smoothies made with tapioca and fruit, and will deliver orders of three or more menu items.

Most dishes cost around $7 and are more than enough to feed one person, so if you decide to share one, you could have room in your stomach and your pocketbook for some wonderful shaved ice. It must be the tastiest way to cool off this summer.
