Orem Public Library receives reading grant
The Orem library has been selected to receive a grant to host The Big Read -- an opportunity to discuss, read and celebrate Harper Lee's classic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird."
The grant is being funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the organization that founded The Big Read as a means of appreciating great American novels.
The Big Read will begin Sept. 8 and go through Oct. 17. For more information, visit www.neabigread.org or www.orembigread.org.
'Ellis Island in the Park'
Live the experiences of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island to become Americans at "Ellis Island in the Park" in Orem this week.
Patriotic presentations, theatrical performances and opportunities to learn about the founding principles of our country will be featured in an interactive format at this event.
"Ellis Island in the Park" will be open today from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday from noon to 8:30 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at SCERA Park, 745 S. State St. in Orem. There is no cost to participate in the event, but each visitor can purchase a package that includes an imitation passport and citizenship papers and other items that teach about America for $3 per person or $15 per family.
Children's art show
The Utah County Art Gallery will be showcasing its annual "Children's Freedom Art" show, a judged art show that includes the work of more than 100 local children.
An awards ceremony will take place at 7 and 8 p.m. on Monday. The Utah County Art Gallery is at 151 S. University Ave. For more information, visit www.utahcountyartgallery.com.
Sculptural installation
An "amorphous cloud-like plume" will cover an entire room at the Sego Arts Center today. This debut sculptural installation is part of the Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll.
Titled "Brandon Boulton," the installation has a minimal theme of time, space, material and movement.
