SCERA

Footloose: The Musical to play July 5-19 -- Director Neal Johnson says he has no doubt audiences will leave "Footloose: The Musical" energized after seeing the live production at the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre.

Based on the hit 1984 movie musical by the same name, "Footloose" is designed as a quick and explosively fast-paced production highlighted by hip choreography and its Oscar-nominated Top 40 musical score.

The SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre will present the musical July 5-19 at 8 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children (3-11), students (w/ID) and seniors (65+). Seating is on a grassy slope, and patrons may bring blankets or rent a chair for $1.00. Reserved seating areas range from $12 to $14 for adults and $10 to $12 for children, students and seniors. Tickets are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. at the SCERA Center, 745 S. State, Orem, by calling (801) 225-ARTS, online at www.scera.org or at the Shell gate one hour prior to the show.

"We are using a script that has been retooled within the last six months, which really adds to the show," Johnson says. "Some music has been added that supports the story, while keeping the music 'Footloose' is famous for."

Hits include "Almost Paradise," "Holding Out for a Hero," "Never," "I'm Free," "Somebody's Eyes," and two that reached number one status on the billboard charts: "Let's Hear it for the Boy" and "Footloose," the title song.

"One of the changes in this script is a shift of theme that includes a full circle of forgiveness, which adds new depth, and I believe, strength to the show," Johnson says.

Assisting Johnson are Kellie Messerly as choreographer, Korianne Johnson as music director, Marnie Conklin as costume designer, David Whitlock as set designer , Mark Ohran, lighting designer, and Nichele Barlow as stage manager.

The set is based on a theme of crossroads expressing conflicting roles of Chicago's urban energy versus the feel of rural Bomont, Texas. The set uses a variety of road signs to express the crossroads feel. "I guess you could call it 'Rebel Without a Cause Meets the '90s," Johnson adds.
