Wrestling with kids: Utah youth participate in national championships Print E-mail

A total of 314 wrestlers from 34 different states competed in the Asics USA Wrestling Kids Greco-Roman National championships held at the McKay Event center on the campus of Utah Valley University on Thursday.

Taylor Lamont and Caleb Williams were crowned national champs, leading 13 Utah wrestlers that placed in the top four. Lamont won the Midget (ages 9 and 10) 65-pound weight class defeating Austin Gomez 2-2, 5-5 in a hotly contested bout. Lamont won his match as he was able to score the last point, thus earning the tiebreaker, in each of the two periods in the best-of-three period match.

Williams won his championship bout 2-1, 6-0 against Anthony Bosco, also out of Illinois, to nail down the gold medal in the Novice (ages 11 and 12) 65- pound weight class.

Placing second in the Midget 50-pound division was Jaxon Cole while Sean Johnson placed fourth in the Midget 75 pound division. In the Novice division joining Williams in the top four were Matthew Lee in the 60 pound weight class and Tanner Cox fourth place in the 65-pound division.

In the school boy age division (ages 13 and 14) Utah didn't crown any champions but placed seven grapplers in the top four.

Andrew Dubose was second in the 175-pound division, Joe Flores was second in the 190-pound division, Brandon George placed third in the 84-pound division, Dalton Harmon was third in the 91-pound division, Grant Lamont was third in the 98-pound division, Jesse Carlisle was third in the 112-pound division, and Jake Ribald was fourth in the 128-pound division.

Approximately 400 wrestlers set their sights on the gold in the Freestyle portion of the tournament on Friday.

A Parade of Competitors also took place. which had some "extra special" features to honor both the competitors and America on Independence Day.

The Freestyle championship finals will take place this morning at 9 a.m.
