Landlord measure called discriminatory Print E-mail
Daily Herald

What is our Provo City Counsel trying to prove by promoting the Good Landlord Program? I have never heard of anything more hateful and mean-spirited, not to mention an act against our Constitution's First Amendment. This is bare-faced discrimination!

When ex-criminals return to society, integrating into a community is extremely difficult. It's hard enough trying to obtain employment with a record, but now they will not be able to live. They already find it difficult to find housing. This ordinance will make it near impossible. Have they not paid their debt? Must they keep paying? These ex-criminals need our support. They need to feel they can be successful on the outside. If we as a community make it difficult for them, they will give up and end right back on the taxpayers role in our jails and prisons. Many people feel that ex-felons have no rights, right to privacy or right to respect. Once a landlord runs a background check, the deck is stacked.

Please council members, don't say this is not meant to be discriminatory and you just want to clean up the community. Let's just dig a big hole out in the desert and sweep up all the ex-offenders to live there. This way we won't have to deal with them, their distasteful past or their potential problems.
