Bees rally in ninth for victory

SALT LAKE CITY -- Jordan Czarniecki singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Brandon Wood from third, to give the Salt Lake Bees a 3-2 victory over Tacoma on Monday night in Pacific Coast League play.

The Bees got three hits and a walk in the ninth inning to come back from a 2-1 deficit to get the victory.

After Matthew Brown flew out, Dee Brown doubled for the Bees. Wood walked and Brown scored on a single by Ben Johnson. Adam Pavkovich grounded into a fielder's choice, with Johnson out at second, but Pavkovich was safe at first and Wood went to third. That set up Czarniecki's game-winning hit.

In other Bees news, the Bees announced Monday that right-handed pitcher Shane Loux has been placed on the disabled list with right hip inflammation. Loux, 28, has appeared in 18 games for the Bees in 2008, owning a team-best 10-4 record with a 4.25 ERA. The Rapid City, S.D. native signed with the Angels as a free agent on November 13, 2007.

• Angels recall Budde: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced Monday that the club has recalled catcher Ryan Budde and promoted catcher Ben Johnson from double-A Arkansas to triple-A Salt Lake.

Budde, 28, has appeared in 37 games for the Bees in 2008, hitting .200 with six doubles, two triples, two home runs and 19 RBI. This is Budde's first trip to the Majors this season. He made his major league debut for the Angels on July 31, 2007.

Johnson, 26, has appeared in 84 games for the Travelers in 2008, hitting .267 with 16 doubles, one triple, 20 home runs and a league leading 71 RBI.

Aggies name women's assistant coach

LOGAN -- Utah State women's head basketball coach Raegan Pebley announced the hiring of Astou Ndiaye-Diatta as an assistant for USU.

"I am excited that Astou has joined our program," said Pebley. "We are thrilled that our program has been able to attract someone of her character, experience and prominence. Fish takes top seed into tournament

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Top-seeded Mardy Fish is in for some excitement this week even before he plays on the Hall of Fame's grass courts.

Fish, a Minnesota native and self-described "big Twins fan," is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before his favorite team takes on the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park tonight.

"It doesn't get any bigger than that, really," Fish said during opening round play at the Hall of Fame tournament on Monday afternoon. "I watch every single Twins game when I'm on the road."

Fish didn't hesitate when the idea was e-mailed to him a few months back.

"Most of the time I'll take my time writing back. This time it was an immediate response of: 'Are you kidding? What's the catch?' " he said. "That's the pinnacle."

In the heart of Red Sox country, Fish certainly understands the number of T-shirts and caps he'll see during his stay in Newport.

"We're not rivals," he said of the teams. "They can talk all they want. They're the defending champs. That's what winning it all gets you."

He's hoping his match will be later in the day Wednesday so he can watch the entire game before riding about 90 minutes back to Newport tonight. Fish's first match will be against qualifier Rohan Bopanna, who defeated Kevin Kim, 6-3, 6-4, in opening round play Monday.

No top seed has won the Hall of Fame tournament in its 31-year history.

In other opening round play Monday, Vince Spadea defeated Simon Stadler, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4; Brendan Evans ousted Paul Capdeville, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1; and Mikhail Ledovskikh edged Denmark's No. 1 ranked player, Kristian Pless, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Sixth-seed Donald Young beat qualifier Woong-Sun Jun, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; and qualifier Alexander Peya outlasted Philipp Petzschner, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-5.

NBA Summer Leagues

Round 1 to Beasley: His Heat top Rose's Bulls

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Michael Beasley stood in the doorway to the gym an hour before gametime, iPod in his left hand, head bobbing slightly as he chatted with new Miami Heat teammate Mario Chalmers.

He was the picture of cool.

And on the court, his demeanor didn't change much. If Beasley was the tiniest bit anxious about his first pro outing -- one that came against the Chicago Bulls and Derrick Rose, the only player selected before him in last month's NBA draft -- he hid the nerves perfectly. Beasley scored 28 points in 23 minutes, lifting Miami past Chicago 94-70 on Monday in the Orlando summer league opener for both teams.

It was the ninth-highest scoring performance in Orlando summer league history, and true to his form, Beasley wasn't the least bit impressed.

"Could have played better," he said. "Could have got a couple more assists, made a couple extra passes, got a couple more rebounds, could have got a couple stops early on."

He was 9-for-21 from the field, with nine rebounds and 19 points in the second half -- matching the total that Bulls forwards Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas, both second-year NBA players, managed in the entire game. The Bulls started with Thomas guarding Beasley, switched to put Noah on him midway through the first quarter, and neither had much of an answer.

"He's a great player on the pick-and-roll and he's going to be someone who'll be very tough to guard," Noah said. "I mean, I was very impressed. He was very comfortable in everything that he wanted to do and he did a great job."

Meanwhile, Rose had some moments, but simply never took over the game offensively the way Beasley did. The guard who spearheaded Memphis' run to the NCAA title game this past season finished with 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting, with four assists and five turnovers -- mostly while being guarded by Chalmers, who hit the big shot as Kansas beat Rose's Tigers in overtime in that national championship game.

In another Orlando game, former Utah State All-American Jaycee Carroll led the New Jersey Nets team to an 86-74 win against the host Magic.

Carroll, who started at point for New Jersey and played 19:22, scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. He was 0-of-1 from 3-point range. Carroll was also the team's top rebounder with seven and top assist man with five assists.

Now Jr. has won twice and not a single mention in the sport section.

Why does the Herald ignore one of the most popular sports in the country?

I see we're back to a mere mention of the sport again.

Too bad.
