While still recovering under the protective care of his family, hospital staff and physicians at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Lehi Police Captain Harold Terry has remained in the public heart.
"We've been overwhelmed by the response -- the cards, the letters, the donations," said Lehi Police Department spokesperson Darren Paul. "We're touched and grateful."
Terry's condition has gone from critical to fair and stable since June 23 when he was shot twice in the head while conducting a traffic stop in east Lehi.
He is out of the hospital's intensive care unit but no further information is available on his condition or progress.
"The family has asked me not to release any details," UVRMC spokesperson Janet Frank said.
The Terry family lawn was mowed four times during Round-Up Week, presumably by neighbors, reported Lehi City administrator Jamie Davidson during a City Council work session July 1.
A local printing company produced decals with Terry's profile and the words "Pray for Captain Terry" on them. The Lehi Police Department staff has asked those receiving the decals to make any donations at Central Bank to the Captain Harold Terry fund. They have temporarily run out of the decals but hope to have more available at the station, 580 W. State St., soon.
"It's overwhelming, the support that the community has shown," said LPD executive secretary Kim Street.
Signs are posted outside Lehi homes asking others to "Pray for Harold Terry" and two fundraisers have been organized for the Terry family.
"We've had a lot of concerned citizens approach us about fundraisers for Captain Harold Terry and we are grateful for the concerned citizens who are willing to give," said Paul.
Brittany Bird, a neighbor, is hosting a fundraiser Friday at the Legacy Center, 123 N. Center St., Lehi, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. She is giving all proceeds to the Terrys.
"He is actually one of the officers I respect the most and he is a hero to all of us," Bird said. "We're just helping an officer out."
Sophia Bird and Janet Norman are also helping organize the event. Lehi Legacy Center, Pioneer Party and Copy and Xtreme Drywall and Designs are sponsoring the fundraiser.
Bird's great-aunt Lee Redmond will be helping as well and is the star of the event. Redmond is the world record holder for having the longest fingernails, and will be posing with those attending the fundraiser for $5 a photo printed while you wait, or $5 a autographed stock photo. There will be a raffle drawing for an autographed hardback 2008 Guinness Book of World Records. Redmond's nails are so long she sleeps with her fingers hanging over a mattress edge. To eat, she has to use a side of her thumb and index finger.
Bird said she thinks the extra-strong nails are a genetic trait, but not everyone can live Redmond's lifestyle.
"You have no idea," Bird said. "They get a little long with me, I cut them off,"
She said they hope to organize activities for kids as well.
Another fundraiser, a "kick-a-thon," will take place on Aug. 9 at the Jaguar Sport Karate studio in Eagle Mountain at 3535 E. Ranches Parkway behind Maranatha at the four-way stop intersection.
Martial arts instructor Lee Barnard, and a southern California police officer of 17 years, is sponsoring the event with Pleasant Grove Police Officer Josh Motsinger.
"We just put it together over the weekend," said Barnard who lost a co-worker, Jim Jensen, in the line of duty in 1996. The proceeds from the kick-a-thon will go to the Terry family.
More information about the event is available from Barnard at 789-7668. Also contact him if you want to sponsor a kicker or want to register as a kicker. Sponsor forms for kickers can be found at www.jaguarsportkarate.net.
Barnard also has plans for a free child safety workshop as well as a personal awareness workshop during the kick-a-thon.
