Drivers must be alert Print E-mail
Daily Herald

I am writing this letter as a concerned mother, grandmother, and bike rider. On July 9th my son was hit by a woman driving a car on State Street in Orem. My two grandsons were riding in front of my son and had safely crossed the road.

The woman driver was not paying attention and pulled out and hit my son, throwing him onto the hood of the car and onto the ground. His bicycle was destroyed and went through the front of the car. The woman gave my son $40 to pay for the bike and left him there with my grandsons. He ended up in the emergency room with one broken shoulder and the other dislocated.

I am asking the woman that hit him to do the right thing and contact the Orem City Police Department to report the accident and help pay for medical bills. This is also a great reminder for all drivers to pay attention while driving and watch for pedestrians. With the rising cost of gas prices, there will be many more pedestrians, and we all need to share the roads with people that use bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, etc.

This thread discusses the Content article: Drivers must be alert

I don't want to disagree with you but it isn't enough for drivers to be alert to the presence of bicyclists, but that the bicyclists themselves need to be more aware of traffic. The need to obey traffic laws and the flow of traffic. The same laws that apply to cars also apply to bicyclists. They must ride on the same side of the road as cars. They must signal when they are going to turn. They must turn left in the same lanes as cars.
And yes, in order for this to be possible, car drivers need to share the road and obey simple traffic laws that require them to stop behind the first white line before the crosswalk. Something that the police should enforce with vehemence (which they are not). In fact, the fine is something in the ball park of $150 for stopping beyond that line which is where the intersection begins and an additional $250 for stopping in a crosswalk.
Secondly, drivers need to turn left into their designated lane and use their signals to move over into any other lanes they wish to be in (an it would be an improvement for drivers to use their signals at all). This is the legal way to do it. Again, we need to enforce this simple traffic law.
Lastly, and this one is a person peev of mine, we need to pull all the way into the turning lane to turn. Bicyclists are not supposed to ride on the sidewalk. They occupy the three feet next to the white line on the side of the road. They need to be given that space and motorists need to respect that and stop driving like lazy buffoons, meandering in and out of wherever they feel suits them best ignoring all of the world much less the traffic around them.

Risk!

It is what we all do every day.
Some sadly choose to "push the envelope" and ride ANYTHING on State street. Some make it home for supper and some don't....everywhere in America.

It is too bad we all can't ride in armor.

The fool who hit him WILL be found.

"I pity the Fool"...

I pray for a speedy recovery and the justice to follow....certainly!

Is that your opinion or the law in this specific instance?

It is the law - Bikes are supposed to be ridden in the road.
