WASHINGTON -- In another push to deal with soaring gas prices, President Bush on Monday will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling that his stood since his father was president. But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts as well.
The president plans to officially lift the ban and explain his actions in a Rose Garden statement, White House press secretary Dana Perino said.
There are two prohibitions on offshore drilling, one imposed by Congress and another by executive order signed by former President Bush in 1990. The current president, trying to ease market tensions and boost supply, called last month for Congress to lift its prohibition before he did so himself.
But Perino said Bush no longer wants to wait. She pinned blame on the leaders of the Democratic Congress for inaction.
"They haven't even held a single hearing," Perino said. "So we are going to move forward, and hopefully that will spur action by the Congress."
Asked if Bush's action alone will lead to more oil drilling, Perino said, "In terms of allowing more exploration to go forward? No, it does not."
The president, in his final months of office, has responded to record gas-prices with a series of proposals, including more oil exploration. None would have immediate impact on prices at the pump, according to White House officials, who say there is no quick fix. But starting action now would help, they say.

Sorry, Woody. I was at the gas station watching for the price to come down. Guess it will take a little while longer. Nothing happened so I came home and checked the forum.
Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you?
Guess I'll just wait for the gas tax holiday. I hope it's on a Friday so we get a three-day weekend.

Hey Woody, never did answer the question as to where you got that cute little "black women voters" comment? As for baby killing I know you Republican'ts would rather grow them up, let them marry, have kids then send to to be slaughtered. Seems like a waste of energy don't you think little Rush fan?
As for the ban being lifted, won't happen, congress is not going to lift it and guess what Woodman, the liar and thief's regime ends in 189 days. His daddy is going to be very upset but Bush has always been about disrespecting his father's decision hasn't he?

Lifting the ban would likely have no affect on existing prices anyway, whether it is lifted or not. To do that it would have had to happen years ago, so the machinery was in place now to extract the oil and the refineries in place to refine the stuff. It will be years before any of that is ready to go, even if the ban is lifted, which isn't likely to happen. It is a feel-good measure, nothing more. Like lifting the gas-tax, it sounds good at first but when you look a little further it doesn't help, and may actually hurt.
If we lift the ban today, then in a few years we may see a return on that investment - if we haven't figured out a way out of our current bind by then that is. If, by some miracle, we have found a way to lessen our dependence no oil by then the additional drilling wouldn't mean much. If we are still oil dependent we could see some more oil available from the home front - if the ban was lifted, but I doubt that would happen.
