Is Payson a "hick town"?
I had a reader e-mail me this week condemning my journalism skills. First of all, I admit I do not have a degree in journalism, but I have had a lot of fun writing for the Nebo Reporter. I am sure my other writers would say they have fun also. (or they probably wouldn't do it). And I am proud of all the good compliments I have received from so many wonderful people.
This reader was offended by being called a policeman in stead of police officer and a fireman instead of a firefighter. Which ever term is used, it means the same.
We are proud of our protectors of the city, what ever they are called.
How many times have you heard the expression "you guys" whether it is a group of men or women? I have never been offended by it as I am sure many of you haven't. It's just an expression, but I guess there is always someone who likes to be offended and get their two cents worth in.
This reader was afraid we would be known as a 'hick town' if people read these terms, policemen and firemen.
My husband has been a fireman (or firefighter) for 47 years and when talking to he or any of the firemen, they refer to themselves as firemen. Either way, they do a great job for our city.
Hick town or not, Payson is a great place with a lot of good people in it. We at the Nebo Reporter just want those great men and women to know how much we appreciate what they do for us as citizens of Payson.
We are truly sorry if anyone has been offended by our terminology and journalism skills (or lack of, as some people think).
We will certainly try to do better in the future. |
