Better ideas on spending needed Print E-mail
Daily Herald

I have been reading with interest about Republican congressional candidate Jason Chaffetz's comments on earmarks. My first impression was that maybe we have someone here that has the courage to question how things are done in Washinton.

Your editorial left me with more questions. Especially alarming was the statement "federal bureaucrats would decide where to send your tax dollars." Do you mean to tell me that the only way we can get our federal tax dollars back into the state for such worthy projects as road construction and educational programs is to use appropriations earmarks? Isn't there another more legitimate way?

I would like to hear more specific ideas about how to bring our nation's spending under control. I personally believe that our goverment is a reflection of us as a people. What we tolerate in ourselves (for example debt or dishonesty), we tolerate in our elected officials. You state that a member of Congress has "to learn to work within a frustrating system". That may be true but we can and should ask if that system is ethical and if not, seek for change.

We need someone like Jason Chaffetz. Since he is running, he is getting my vote.

Lisa, you are so right. We need someone who can stand against the status quo and say "no more". We need someone who can call a spade a spade. We need someone who can get past the wink and a nod way of doing business because "that's the way it's always been done". Bull pucky. We don't need other Republicans who have no spine and we don't need Dems who feel the same. We need new blood, with fresh, courageous ideas. THere is no question that Jason Chaffetz is - by far - the BEST choice for the 3rd Congressional district.
