Carl McClellan has been a firefighter serving the Payson community for thirty years. "I'm a firefighter because of the community service," says McClellan.
"The hard part is the middle of the night fires. The best part is the guys I associate with in the fire department. Most of them are there for the community service. Some of the best men in the community are in the fire department and I like to be associated with them," says McClellan.
McClellan has many memories in his years of service. One that stands out is when Payson Furniture burned down in 1985. They managed to save the office, but after seeing the extent of the damage they ended up just taking the building down anyway.
McClellan was the fire chief in '85 and '92. "There were things I liked about being the fire chief and things I didn't like. I liked being on top of things and being involved in the decision making. I enjoyed getting to know other fire chiefs in the country," says McClellan.
There are many things McClellan loves about Payson. "There's just a lot of good solid people here that I've known all my life. I like the community atmosphere here. I like the location, the mountains, and the canyon," says McClellan
When McClellan isn't a firefighter he works at BYU in the carpenter shop. He and his wife, Jill, have five children, four sons and one daughter. One of his sons works with him as a firefighter. McClellan enjoys being active by going scuba diving, water skiing, and snow skiing.
