MORONI-- The Moroni City Council canceled the bid for the old city hall building during the regular July 17 council meeting. The council had accepted a sealed bid for $95,000 for the building at the June 5 meeting from Jacob and Mark Michie. They said at that time they would proceed to find financing. That turned out to be a problem for Michie.
Mark Michie said he and his son went to seven or eight different financial companies and most turned them down. They were not willing to finance a commercial building being turned into a private home.
The ones that would finance it would only do so if they could find an appraiser that would appraise the building as a home. He said the only appraiser in the area turned him down and said he would only appraise it as a commercial building.
Michie said the only other option was to get a commercial building loan and that avenue was much more expensive and would cost more money than they could get. He said they even tried to tie up some land in the deal, but the lending institutions refused that.
Michie said he would keep trying if the council wanted him too, but he would prefer being let out of the contract.
The council members agreed to let him out of the contract and intend to put the building back on the market.
Sports
Sports Director Franki Miramontes told council members she had seen several salary figures "in the paper" but she wasn't sure how much she would be paid. She thought the $3,000 figure was to handle three types of sports, soccer, boys and girls softball and basketball.
The council wasn't sure either. Mayor Ron Pipher voiced the council's doubt and said they didn't know how it would work since they had never had a sports director before.
Miramontes was agreeable and settled with the council for $3,000 for the entire sporting program for a year. Councilman Greg Morley said Councilman Crosland had put $3,000 in the budget for the program.
The council agreed to break down payments into 12 monthly payments at $250 per month and agreed to pay her $750 for the months she had already worked.
During the discussion, Miramontes talked about some of the expenses the summer sporting programs incur. She said there was a $40 expense the city has to pay the state if the winning teams from Moroni go to state playoff.
The council also noted some equipment needed to be replaced and Morley suggested the council make a locked area in the new Moroni City Hall to help keep and track equipment and give Miramontes a key.
Miramontes said the cost so far was about $100 per team. She said she did find some old baseball equipment but it seemed to be for high school kids and not elementary.
She said currently boys get gray uniforms and girls get white, for baseball,
but she suggested the city consider getting t-shirts and letting the participants keep the t-shirts.
Mayor Pipher said he would meet with her to work out what the expenses would be.
Miscellaneous
The council awarded Allen Sherman the contract for repairing sidewalks in three places around the city. Sherman had the lower bid at $1,500. There was a second bid of $2,000. Pipher reported at one of the repair sites, a tree had destroyed the sidewalk. The city plans to remove the tree. Pipher reported on the upcoming car show Tuesday, July 29. He said there will be a talent show at 11 a.m. Miss Utah will be there along with the Moroni Pageant girls.
The city will have turkey, salad, watermelon and drinks available to purchase. He said Moroni Feed Company donated 50 pounds of turkey meat for the event.
Councilman Orson Cook recommended the city consider installing styrofoam in the ceiling of the pavilion. He said it would stop the heat transfer from the metal roof.
Mayor Pipher reported he has several citizens asking for speed bumps in the town to slow cars down. Councilman Todd Pay said the city will begin impounding four-wheelers caught breaking the law.
Councilman Morley said he had checked with the phone company about getting an automated machine to call violators of irrigation schedules but the phone company told him the city's new phone system in the new city hall couldn't handle it. |
