PYR Pioneer Day celebrations around Sanpete County Print E-mail

SANPETE COUNTY-- Pioneer Day celebrations will be held from one end of Sanpete County to the other.

Mayfield

A list of events for the 24th of July celebration in Mayfield includes a parade at 10 a.m., followed by entertainment, food and booths at the city park as well as a giant slide.

An auction will take place at 1 p.m., along with games and a greased pig chase and the much-anticipated wild duck river race will release the participants at 2 p.m.

The events are sponsored by the Mayfield Lions Club and all proceeds will go toward a new ampitheatre and restrooms at the city park. Call 528-5061 for further information.

Fairview

On the north end of the county, Fairview Pioneer Days gets started at 6 a.m., with the fireman wake-up call, followed by a 5K run, beginning at the city park at 6:30 a.m.

At 7 a.m., the flag raising ceremony will be held at the city park and a pioneer breakfast will be served by the mayor and city council at the city park. There is also a sand volleyball tournament at the city park. Eight teams, consisting of six players each, will be allowed to compete.

There will be a Daughters of Utah Pioneers program at the rock church, 131 East 100 North and a craft fair at the Fairview Dance Hall, both at 9 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m., the kids parade will march along State Street and the Pioneer Day parade along State Street at 11 a.m., followed with the EMT lunch at the city park at 12 p.m.

Fairview Idol will begin at 1 p.m., at the city park and at 6 p.m., there will be a concert by the Phat Old Professors at the rodeo arena. Admission is free with a derby ticket, and derby tickets are required to attend. The day will end with the demolition derby at the rodeo arena at 7 p.m. Tickets are sold out.

Friday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m., a pre-kids' rodeo entertainment performed by C Minor, will take place at the rodeo arena. This is free with paid admission into the kids' rodeo. Kids under the age of two are free. The kids' rodeo begins at 7 p.m.

Horse parade

The annual horse parade will be Saturday, July 26, along State Street, starting at Fred and Audrey's, at 6 p.m. Everyone is encouraged be part of the parade. Anyone interested in participating can come at 5 p.m. to register. The rodeo will begin at 8 p.m.

Spring City

Pioneer Day celebrations in Spring City for Thursday, July 24, are as follows: From 7-9 a.m., a fireman's breakfast will be available at the fire station. Entries are due by 9 a.m., for the pie and bread baking contests.

Cash prizes will be awarded.

The parade will line up at 9 a.m. and the the Pioneer Day parade will start at 10 a.m.. Family entries are welcome and cash prizes will be awarded. The theme this year is "A Bit of America."

From 12-1:30 p.m., a barbecue turkey lunch will be available and there will be entertainment at the city park, along with a horseshoe tournament.

Activities at the city park including children's games, water games, a climbing wall, a turkey trot and a tug-of-war from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Entertainment and cowboy poetry at 7 p.m., will end the day at the city park.

On Friday, July 25, there will be a co-ed youth softball tournament for youths aged 12-18, and an adult co-ed softball tournament July 25 and 26, for ages 18 and up.

A scenic bike ride consisting of lengths of 10 miles, 25 miles, and 50 miles will be on Saturday, July 26.

Additionally, color copies of the "Itty-Bitty Historical Photo Contest" will be available at city hall. There are 12 historical photos included, all found within the confines of 100 West-100 East and 200 North-200 South in Spring City. The object of the contest was to find where the photos were taken, provide their location and address and state the historical significance of that particular place. The winner will be announced during the Pioneer Day lunch and the winner will receive cash prize.

Sterling

Sterling encourages everyone to come celebrate Pioneer Days in the town park. There will be something for "pioneers" of all ages. Contact Amber Jarvis at 435-835-1178 for further information.

Centerfield

Centerfield will hold a Pioneer Day breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., at the city park. Donations will be accepted. Contact David Beck at 435-528-3672 for details.
