BOSTON -- Joba Chamberlain dominated Boston in his best major league start and surging New York Yankees two games behind their longtime rivals in the AL East with a 1-0 victory Friday night.
Chamberlain (3-3) allowed three singles and struck out nine in a career-high seven innings. Mariano Rivera shut down a threat in the eighth and went on to remain perfect in 26 save opportunities as the Yankees improved to 7-0 since the All-Star game.
• Rays 5, Royals 3: At Kansas City, Edwin Jackson surpassed his victory total for last season and Tampa Bay snapped a seven-game road losing streak.
The Rays, who moved one game in front of Boston in the AL East, won on the road for the first time since June 29, at Pittsburgh.
• White Sox 6, Tigers 5: At Detroit, Jermaine Dye hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Chicago.
The White Sox rallied to win in the ninth for the first time in 39 games this season after Carlos Guillen had put Detroit ahead with a tiebreaking homer in the seventh.
• Angels 6, Orioles 5: At Baltimore, Juan Rivera and Casey Kotchman homered to help Los Angeles' Joe Saunders earn his 13th victory.
Back after missing two games on bereavement leave, Torii Hunter had two RBI for the Angels, who led 5-0 after two innings and held on for their eighth win in nine games.
• Indians 5, Twins 4: At Cleveland, Cliff Lee became the major leagues' first 14-game winner and Cleveland ended an eight-game losing streak inside the AL Central.
The Twins lost their fifth straight and center fielder Carlos Gomez, who left the game with a back injury.
• Blue Jays 5, Mariners 4, At Toronto, Joe Inglett's two-run single with the bases loaded in the 10th gave Toronto the win and handed Seattle its sixth consecutive loss.
• Rangers 14, A's 6: At Oakland, The Rangers rallied from five runs down and defeated the Athletics
Josh Hamilton hit a two-run home run in a five-run fourth inning to give him 100 RBI on the season. |
