Rex Delbert Mohlman
Our father, husband, grandfather, brother, and friend, Rex Delbert Mohlman, passed away early Thursday morning, August 7, 2008, peacefully in his hotel room while on vacation at Snowbird Ski Resort. He fought a valiant fight and approached his lifelong physical challenges with unending good humor and grace.
Rex was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 12, 1939, the first child of Orson D. (Art) Mohlman and Jeanette Maxwell Mohlman, both of whom preceded him in death.
His first years were spent in Logan while his father studied and graduated from Utah State University. Rex attended and graduated from Spanish Fork High School, then served an honorable mission to the Central Atlantic States Mission where he had great success. He had a particular love for the months he spent on Harker's Island, North Carolina teaching the gospel.
As a young man, he was known far and wide for his wonderful singing voice, and his love for performing in musical theater. He took this gift of music and used it often in the mission field, singing whenever the opportunities allowed, and even toured his mission with a missionary choir he had gathered where he shared his musical talents with great joy. He instilled in all of his children a love of music and performance, and took great pride in their performances of many different kinds.
After returning from his mission, he majored in political science at BYU. Upon his graduation from the Y in 1964, he was selected as a White House Intern, a highly sought after honor. He then worked many years for the General Services Administration (GSA) in Washington State, taking an early retirement when his health further deteriorated and he and his family returned to Utah. Rex also devoted much of his life to teaching and coaching of numerous athletic teams, both of which brought him and his students great joy.
On August 9, 1963, he married Tamara (Wagner), a fellow political science student, and together they had five children: Rex David (Diane) Mohlman; Laura Jean (Mohlman Judd); Andrew Maxwell (Michelle) Mohlman; Jonathan Grant (Leslie) Mohlman; and Timothy Wagner (Jessica) Mohlman. Rex and Tamara divorced in 1989, but remained deep and loving friends for the remainder of his life.
In 1990, Rex married Susan (Eyre Lewis) and took on the responsibility of loving and guiding her children- David (Lynette) Lewis; April (Alex) Oosteven; John (Shauna) Lewis; and Emily (Trampis) Fleming; and all of their children. Rex was unfailingly kind to his family. He always had a smile for each of us and was a devoted "Papa" and "Grandpa" to his 34 grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Elaine (Joe) Francis of Layton, Utah and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. His beloved younger brother, Dr. Hal David (Patricia) Mohlman, also preceded him in death.
Tamara and her family express their love and endless gratitude to Susan for taking such kind, tender, and loving care of Rex, giving us all nearly 20 more years of his life with his attending joyful spirit.
Be well and finally free from the pains of this world, Dear Rex, from your many children, grandchildren, and your Dear Susan. Your many loved ones will sorely miss you and your joy for life.
Services were held August 12, 2008. Interment was at the Spanish Fork Cemetery following the service.
