Alpine Days celebration finishes with 5K race Print E-mail
Aaron Holtsclaw - North county staff

The last day of the Alpine Days celebration began in the chill of early morning outside of city hall. Over 300 racers congregated and prepared for the upcoming 5K race.

Some discussed the race with friends while others remained aloof, in the private world created by their iPod which separated them from the rest of their contenders.

As preparations continued, the non-headphoned crowd enjoyed the sounds of Kenny Loggins and the Eagles as played by event coordinator Mike Evans. It was Evans's 17th year coordinating the event.

"I used to run in this but now I put it together so I don't have to run anymore," Evans joked before the race. His team of family members and friends assisted him to make sure the event went off without a hitch.

As the contestants raced away, you could not help but notice the vast difference in competitors. Men and women from the very young, to the over 70 category competed in the race. Some racers even pushed a cart including a kid or two on the event which measures more than three miles.

The overall winner of the event was Brandon Hebbert who finished at 15:19. Danika Antczak finished first among female competitors at 21:21.

Evans meanwhile was encouraging the runners to finish before the sun appeared over the mountain. The next race was the toddler trot, which featured every entrant finishing in first place.

You could see the joy on the children's faces as they crossed the finish line encouraged by Evans' voice coming over the public address system saying, "First place, and another first place, oh, the next two are tied for first place."

Another event which was well received was the golf tournament which was run by Alpine City Council member Tracy Wallace.

"The tournament went very well," Wallace said. "We had some good golfers and some that really enjoy just being out in the open air. The lunch following the tournament was really good and we appreciated Bridgestone Golf and River Meadows Senior Living for their help in sponsoring the golf tournament and Jim Madsen at Cedar Hills Golf for helping us organizing the tournament."

The team of Larry Redding and Dave Pendleton finished first in the tournament followed by Hunter and Rick Christensen. The mid point winners was a tie between the teams of Eldon¬ and Paul¬ Huntsman and Glen Simmons with Bart Jacobs. The longest drive went to big hitter Redding while closest to the pin was Ron Devey).

Once again, Alpine Days was a success due to the hard work of the Alpine City Council as well as the countless volunteers who put in their time to make the event something the city of Alpine could be proud of.

Mayor Hunt Willoughby led the hike up to Lake Hardy on Friday morning which had 25 people in attendance and went really well according to the mayor.

"Everything was well attended and the kids seemed to be having a great time," Willoughby said. "My 6-year-old definitely did on Saturday in the park.

"The fireside on Sunday was fascinating, and I just started my thank you letters for the volunteers," he said. "The City Council put in hundreds of hours as well as the Alpine Youth Council. They did a great job and we couldn't have pulled it off better without them."

The mayor said he is looking forward to getting feedback from the people of Alpine about what they liked and what they want changed.

"Any complaints will get you a job as the chairman of that event," Willoughby joked. His goal is to make every Alpine Days better then the last and he wants to hear from the citizens.

"I like the fact that the commercial area was moved out of Legacy Park so the park was left for the kids to enjoy," Willoughby said. "All in all, it was a fun week."
