SALT LAKE CITY -- The Democratic nominee in Utah's 3rd Congressional District told The Salt Lake Tribune that Jesus would vote for him if he had the chance.
"I think he would," Bennion Spencer told the newspaper, although he later said he isn't sure who Jesus would vote for.
"I absolutely have no idea whatsoever," he told The Associated Press on Friday. "I think voters have to make the decision based on studying the issue and studying the person and try to best decide the challenges they face in their life."
Spencer is writing a book about how Jesus would view certain policies. He said that his comment about who Jesus would vote for came in response to a question about immigration policy. He says Jesus would support a "very compassionate" immigration policy.
Spencer is facing Republican Jason Chaffetz in the November election. Chaffetz takes a strict stance on illegal immigration and has said he supports tent-style detention camps and deportation.
"If anything is more sacrilegious, it's to claim to be a believer of God and put someone in a tent city because of their ethnic persuasion," Spencer told the newspaper.
Chaffetz said Spencer crossed the line.
"I believe there is a proper role of religion in our society and we ought to promote that and not run away from it," Chaffetz said. "But I don't think it's appropriate to guess which candidate Jesus Christ would support. That's sacrilegious to me."
Chaffetz defeated six-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon in Utah's June 24 primary for the Republican nomination in the district, where voters are primarily surburban residents in Utah and Salt Lake counties.
This isn't the first time religion has been injected into the 3rd District race. Cannon's primary opponent last year, John Jacob, saw his campaign tank after he said the devil was working against him.
Quin Monson, assistant director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, said references to religion in politics usually aren't so blunt.
"I think what Bennion Spencer seems to be doing is a little more unusual, and because of that is likely to make some voters uncomfortable," he said. "It's pretty hard to figure out what Jesus would do on some political questions . . . and I think he's going to make some people a little uncomfortable that he seems so certain."

Wow what you can say about this one.
Yes, Jesus loves everyone: however he didn't try to intagrat the Jews and the Samaritans. He was smart enought to leave them in their own country. I don't know if he likes the fact that illegal, arn't here honestly. Besides isn't that lying and cheating? Mmmmm. A lot of good people are here honestly and get set home. Come to America, but do it the right way, I don't have a problem with that.
A student of mine was being sent back to Austria, because her student visa had run out. She had a good job, going to school etc. She asked me what she should do. I told her to go home (to Austria), fly to Mexico, and come here illegally. She could get all the benefit of this country, and not worry about being deported. (I was joking of course, but that seem to be the solution for honest people)
What would Jesus do? Put us all in time out, until we could get along. Then create a One World Government, with him at the helm.
And then he would banish all the Politicians to burn off their sins. Yup!! that's what He would do.

I totally support Bennion Spencer on this point. We are told from a young age to let the life of Jesus act as our moral compass. Why should a politician be any different? I also believe Jesus, or anyone who claims to be a follower of peace, would bristle at Chaffetz immigration policy. It might be a slight slip of the tongue, but his point is well taken. Good for you Bennion.

1. Jason said if putting our military in tents it is good enough, then it is also more than good enough for jails and prisons. He wasn't targeting someones race. If you don't believe me, watch the video on Jason's website of his convention speech.
2. The tax cuts helped families. Giving government more money isn't the answer. If we were able to keep it, we could support more charities.
3. I have been wondering what the democrat candidates' books are about. It it nice to know what one is about.
4. I am voting for Jason Chaffetz and Bennion's comments trying to say that the Savior would vote for Bennion is even less likely for me to switch.
5. I am all for having people come to the US based on the laws we have. If we have bad laws, fix them.
6. When did we get a democrat candidate that wanted to drill. He was recently quoted making fun of Jason for going to Alaska to check it out.
Vote Jason Chaffetz.
