ALA Provo girl's soccer Print E-mail

Provo and American Leadership Academy's girls soccer game on Tuesday was the type of contest where you felt bad for the goalkeepers.

For the ones who stepped in the goalbox for ALA, it was tough to see a good effort still result in a dozen goals. For the Provo keepers, it was a lonesome time, since nobody really got close to them throughout the game.

But in the end, the Bulldog keepers couldn't complain too much, as Provo had no problem defeating ALA by a 12-0 margin in Provo on Tuesday.

Amber Wadsworth, the leading goalscorer in Class 4A, was one of three Bulldogs to score two goals, bringing her to six on the season after four games. In all, nine different players put a ball in the net for to celebrate Provo's first home game of the season. After taking a 3-2 win over Pleasant Grove, Provo traveled to St. George last weekend, losing to Dixie but defeating Snow Canyon while playing in 107-degree heat.

Back on the home turf, Provo (3-1) brought its own heat right from the start. Wadsworth scored in the second minute with a strong kick from the top of the goalbox that was too fast for anyone to step in front of. ALA (0-2) played tough the next 10 minutes, keeping the ball out of the net despite relentless pressure, but in the 13th minute, junior midfielder Gina Soto snuck one in off the goalie's arm and inside the goalpost. Just a minute after Soto's goal, Hillary Jarman, a senior defender, dribbled the ball into Eagle territory, then patiently cranked in the third goal for the Bulldogs.

The bigger Bulldogs had an easily time shielding the ball with their bodies and stepping in front of the Eagles, forcing ALA to play almost entirely on its side of the field. The pressure kept ALA from managing a single good scoring attack the entire game.

"This helps our confidence more than anything," said Provo coach Chris Chilcoat. "We had a tough two games down in St. George and we haven't played on grass yet, either. It was a good game before region, getting everyone some playing time and scoring some goals, getting everyone touches on the ball."

After senior midfielder Shaylin Baum's shot over the Eagle goalkeeper's outstretched hands found the net, senior forward Ashly Ogden scored back-to-back goals. The first was a put-back after a shot attempt by Wadsworth was blocked. Ogden got to the rebound first, hitting a spot between the goalkeeper and the side bar for Provo's fifth goal of the game. Ogden scored again off a loose ball that she easily put away from five yards out.

In an attempt to pick up the defensive intensity, the Eagles were called for a pair of penalties that led to Provo's final two goals before the half. Senior defender Sepi Ika stepped up from her position in the backfield and scored her first goal off a penalty kick. Jarman earned goal No. 2 in the 35th minute off the shot of the game, a high free kick from approximately 40 yards out that bounced in.

The first minutes of the second half were much of the same until Chilcoat pulled the varsity eight minutes into the half. But Mason Magleby, a junior midfielder, was just getting started. Magleby assisted Jessica Trewartha's goal minutes into the second frame, sending a perfect cross that a wide open Trewartha had no problem converting. After Trewartha returned the favor by assisting Wadsworth's second score to make it 10-0, Magleby again hit a crossing pass off a corner kick that junior midfielder Malorie Black put in the back of the net off a perfectly executed header.

"I liked our passing today at times," Chilcoat said. "But again, there was good passing today and bad passing today. But we're doing pretty well."

Magleby finally got a goal of her own in the 75th minute, streaking down the right side and scoring right before getting knocked to the ground, bringing the score to its final tally.

"I'm proud of them," said Chilcoat. "I put in some JV girls and they worked hard, it was good."

Provo begins region play Thursday on the road against another goal-happy team, Springville. In four preseason games, Springville also split two games against the same St. George schools Provo faced, but also defeated American Fork by six goals and Pleasant Grove by nine on Tuesday.
