• School began in a less-than-traditional way Monday morning at Meadow Elementary in Lehi as students were greeted by Bravo Company, 1457th Engineer Battalion of the Utah National Guard. The visit helped introduce the school's new theme for the year, "Band of Brothers."
Last week, during professional development days, faculty and staff at Meadow spent the morning tackling the Leadership Reaction Course and the rappel tower at Camp Williams. This activity was a prelude to the remainder of the day, which focused on the men of Easy Company and their Band of Brothers during World War II.
There were several activities throughout the day that demonstrated the need to depend on each other and how important it is to face fears and go forward with the conviction that we can do it. These principles of leadership were taught to faculty knowing that, in turn, these would be taught to the students. Faculty and staff at Meadow were given dog tags and camouflage T-shirts to remind them of the theme.
As a culmination to these activities, the National Guard graciously spent the morning of the first day of school at Meadow so students could meet active servicemen.
As part of Meadow's theme this year, there will be a Wall of Heroes to honor those who have served or are serving in the armed forces and are related to any of the children in the school.

• There will be a free skin cancer screening clinic from 8:45-11:45 a.m. today at the Utah County Health and Justice Building, 151 S. University Ave. Doctors and medical personnel will review skin conditions for individuals, looking for abnormalities that might indicate or lead to skin cancer. Referrals to local dermatologists will be made for individuals considered to be at risk.
