OREM MAN TO FACE TRIAL FOR ALLEGED THREATS AGAINST OFFICIALS -- An Orem man will face trial on charges that he threatened a state legislator and Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert.

Attorneys debated Aug. 13 at Provo's 4th District Court whether Bradley Roberts Taylor crossed the line that separates overt threats from simple frustration with government. But Judge Lynn Davis ruled that Taylor's e-mails to the government officials constituted threats that were meant to intimidate, and bound over the 43-year-old Orem man for trial on one count of making terroristic threats against life or property, a second-degree felony.

In his ruling, Davis cited numerous statements from e-mails Taylor is alleged to have sent to Herbert and Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, including comments that Taylor had "taken an oath to kill," was "justified to use force," and wanted to organize an armed militia.

Davis scheduled an entry of plea hearing in the case for Aug. 20.

UVU TRUSTEES AGREE TO SELL LAND TO UTA -- On Aug. 14, the UVU board of trustees approved the sale of 8 acres on the west side of campus in Orem, near Interstate 15, to the Utah Transit Authority for an intermodal hub.

The decision now moves to the state board of regents, which will meet Sept. 5.

The $3.6 million deal has been in the works for at least a year, said Jim Michaelis, Utah Valley University associate vice president of facilities and planning.

Michaelis said that, in general, revenue from land sales goes into the university's general fund. From there it is often spent on the purchase of other property or capital facilities.

UTA would most likely use the property for a bus and rail hub once its FrontRunner commuter rail project comes through.

The FrontRunner project in Utah County was launched Tuesday. The 43-mile rail line will have five stops between Thanksgiving Point and Provo.

UDOT 800 NORTH RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION -- It's almost done. That's according to Scott Thompson, Utah Department of Transportation Region 3 spokesman on soon-to-be-completed 800 North reconstruction project in Orem. Thompson said though there is still some utility work to be finished along with other job completion tasks, it's anticipated the project will be completed in late September or early October.

Asphalt work at the intersection of 800 East is tentatively scheduled for Friday. Traffic on 800 North between 800 East and 1000 East has been switched to the north side while asphalt removal takes place on the south side. Center medians are under construction from Main Street to the 400 East. Left turns have been reinstated at 400 West, State Street and 400 East. Due to the current regional oil shortages this date is subject to change.

Signals work will be done on the signals at the intersections at 400 East, 400 West and 800 East this week. Any impacts or delays should be minimal. Flaggers will be used to help direct traffic while the work is completed.

Left turns are allowed at 400 West, State Street, and 400 East.

Crews will be installing sidewalk in several areas along the south side of 800 North this week.

Landscaping work will begin this week in the raised center medians throughout the project area. In addition to the new cobble rock and preparations for sod, new trees are being planted on the north side of 800 North.

OREM LIBRARY DIGITIZATION PROJECT -- The Orem Public Library's Photo Digitization Project is an effort to locate, digitally scan, preserve, and catalog photographs relating to Orem's history. The Photo Digitization Project will provide for the long-term preservation of these images and will make it possible for patrons and researchers to browse the images on the web and at the library.

Items being sought are any photographs, past or present, which document the history of Orem or which might be of interest to the community at large, including photographs of landscapes, buildings, people, and events.

The library will gladly accept donations of photographs, or will scan your photographs for the project at high quality resolution with a professional grade scanner. Please call the Library at 229-7379 or 229-7377 if you have or know of someone who has photographs to contribute to the project.
