Signs to be modified -- In order to accommodate more business signs for the Highland Corner Business area by Wells Fargo Bank the present monument sign needed to be widened. The Highland Planning Commission unanimously approved a plan by Allied Sign Company to reconfigure and add two feet to the side of the sign so it would meet the 42 square foot limit in the sign ordinance.

This will enable them to add a sign for Mount Blanc Dentistry which occupies an office in the new building on the site. Intermountain Healthcare's sign is also on the monument.

The new plan will include a space for another business sign.

Swimming pools get restrictions -- Swimming pools in Highland will be required to have a six-foot fence around the yard with a self-latching gate and an automated pool cover if City Council follows the recommendation the Planning Commission made Aug. 12.

The only exemption would be if the property is along open space which would require only a five-foot fence. After a public hearing in which several pool owners spoke the commission voted unanimously to approve the motion.

The present ordinance only requires a four-foot fence. "My three-year-old grandson could scale that in two minutes," Commissioner Brent Wallace said.

Concern was expressed an automatic pool cover would limit a pool to a rectangular shape. However, resident Dan Huebsch said his pool was curved and covered with a automated rectangular cover. "No pool contractor will even begin installation unless there is a six-foot fence."

City zoning administrator Lonnie Crowell said although Salt Lake County has an ordinance requiring as six-foot fence Utah County does not.

Child care available -- Day care is available for children who live in the community at Camelot Kids Daycare at Lone Peak High School. Residents looking for a fun and comfortable environment for their child can contact Becky Cox at 717-4568, extension 507.

Awning signs discussed -- The Highland sign ordinance does not allow awning signs. There are presently two businesses in the city who have such awnings. An amendment to the ordinance was discussed at the Aug. 12 Highland Planning Commission. The general consensus of the panel was to allow the signs but limit them so they would not be adjacent to each other and only so many would be allowed in any one business area.

Lonnie Crowell, Highland's zoning administrator said he would write up a draft ordinance for the commission to look at to that effect.

Scout project helps trees -- The Cedar Hills Parks & Trails Committee has expressed appreciation to Devin McGhie, and his Eagle Scout project surveying all of the trees in city parks for missing corrugated bands. These bands cover the base of younger trees, protecting the bark and trunks from deer and lawn mowing equipment. Devin outfitted 108-plus trees with these protective bands.

Scouts do ID kits -- Caden Neiders and his crew of volunteers completed 84 K-ID identification cards at the Family Festival for his Eagle Scout project. The booth had four stations -- questionnaire; photo, weight, and height; fingerprinting; and laminating. Many friends helped with service hours and donations to make this a success. Cedar Hills has thanked him for his work.
