I read with disgust the "Note to cities: Sic 'em." As I read, I kept hoping your editorial staff would be redeemed, but to no avail.
What's so bad about breed specific laws? Simply this: they do not work. You do not have to look far back in our own American history to find examples of "dangerous breeds" of the past. In the not so distant past, German shepherds were viewed as dangerous dogs. But now, German shepherds are a popular choice for police K-9 units. German shepherds also make up 15 percent of the Guide Dog of America's service dog fleet. The intelligence/natural inclinations of dogs can be trained in a number of ways.
The only real problem with pit bull-type dogs and rottweilers is their current popularity among the "wrong" types of people. Helen Keller had a pit bull. Petey of Little Rascals fame has always been a pit bull. Today many pit bulls are used in search and rescue organizations because of their stamina and determination. A well-bred, well-socialized and adequately trained dog of any breed can be a wonderful family and community member. Unfortunately, the converse is also true.
Punish the owners, not the breed.
