Man sentenced in truck stop shooting
SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge on Monday ordered the customer convicted for the fatal shooting of a security guard to a prison term of 15 years to life.
Third District Judge Paul Maughan also rejected an appeal from the defense to sentence Roger Allen Malcolm to a lesser, second-degree felony charge. Maughan says a jury had spoken when it found Malcolm guilty of first-degree felony murder in June.
The family of slain security guard Verne Jenkins wept during the hearing. Addressing Malcolm, Jenkins' mother, Nora Jenkins, said the families hearts are broken and that they suffer sleepless nights because of the shooting.
Jenkins was shot while trying to escort Malcolm out of the Sapp Brothers truck stop in Salt Lake City on Dec. 26, 2007. Malcolm had shouted at clerks over a pack of gum.
Huntsman creates Great Salt Lake Advisory Council
SALT LAKE CITY -- Gov. Jon Huntsman has signed an executive order creating the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council.
Huntsman signed the order Monday, tasking the council with evaluating the environmental health of the lake's ecosystem.
Huntsman says he wants the council to develop a plan as to how the lake can best be used while also protecting it.
The council consists of local politicians, environmental groups and economic development officials.
Huntsman wants the group to submit recommendations to him by the end of the year.
Poll finds support for federal crackdown
SALT LAKE CITY -- An opinion poll commissioned by The Salt Lake Tribune says most people are in favor of a federal crackdown on polygamy.
More than half want federal authorities to get involved, while 27 are opposed.
The poll found more enthusiasm for federal prosecution from non-Mormons than church members.
Overall, they said Utah and Arizona aren't doing a good job cracking down on their own.
Matheson a no-show at Dem convention
SALT LAKE CITY -- Rep. Jim Matheson is a Utah Democrat, even if that isn't always clear from his voting record. He's not going to Denver, either.
Matheson says he's never been to a Democratic national convention and doesn't plan to attend this one.
His absence in Denver was reported by Salt Lake City television and radio operation KSL.com.
Utah's top-ranking Democrat, Matheson has said the event will mostly be pageantry because Barack Obama has the party's nomination sewn up.
Instead, Matheson plans to spend the week campaigning. He also wants to be around when a son starts a new year of grade school.
Matheson is a super-delegate whose vote can't be counted in absentia at the convention.
Load of pigs die after truck overturns
ST. GEORGE -- About 100 pigs died Monday when a tractor-trailer carrying them overturned in southern Utah.
The truck was carrying about 160 pigs from Milford south on Interstate 15.
The Utah Highway Patrol says the truck took a turn too quickly early Monday morning on the highway near Pintura between Cedar City and St. George.
Authorities say some of the pigs died in the collision while others had to be euthanized.
The driver was not injured, but will be issued a citation for the crash.
Memorials planned for victims of plane crash
CEDAR CITY -- A memorial service will be held for the 10 people killed when a twin-engine plane went down and exploded a few miles off a runway.
The Leavitt Group, an insurance conglomerate that owned the airplane, was organizing the memorial for Monday night on an outdoor quad at Southern Utah University.
Cedar City Mayor Gerald R. Sherratt said the city would hold another memorial Thursday at the university's arena.
Federal investigators were moving the shattered, blackened pieces of the plane to Cedar City for study from the crash site about two miles from Canyonlands field airport near Moab.
The pilot and nine other Cedar City residents died in Friday's crash.
The passengers were employees of a Cedar City dermatology company and family members.
