In the shadow of one eight-story tower, construction on another began Tuesday in downtown Provo.
The Zions Bank Financial Center has been delayed months because of a weak-kneed economy and rising construction costs, but dump trucks have begun hauling away tons of dirt. The $33 million building between 100 North and 200 North on University Avenue in Provo will be eight stories tall and have 126,000 square feet of office space. Zions plans to use about 35,000 square feet of that with regional offices on the third and fourth floors and have a bank on the ground floor. Other tenants have not been announced, though an official groundbreaking will be held Sept. 15 where some could be announced, said spokeswoman Heidi Prokop. Plans originally called for a nine-story building, but construction costs forced cuts and instead it will match the eight-story Wells Fargo tower to the south. Completion is expected in early 2010. The bank's current regional center on Freedom Boulevard will be shut down once the new one opens. |
