Provo's girls tennis team seemed no match for Springville's squad Wednesday afternoon on the courts in Springville as the Red Devils beat the Bulldogs 4-0 (scores for one doubles match were unavailable).
Quite literally, no match.
The skeleton crew of six players that make up the Bulldogs' varsity tennis team had difficulty just pairing up enough players to play the robust Red Devil 22-girl roster, let alone rival the talent level.
While the lack of players caused the matches to be played out in a brisk hour's time, Springville dominated in every match.
"We lost five girls to graduation last year," said head Bulldogs coach Paul Tuitupou. "We also have girls involved in other things right now -- soccer, cross country and even girls singing in choir and Springville has some good girls here, but I've never seen anything like this."
The first singles match went to Springville senior Chelsi Dayton, who topped Bulldog sophomore Ivette Morales, 6-3, 6-1.
Morales, who is the veteran on her team full of freshmen, made a early push in the first set, jumping ahead of Dayton, but began to slip as Dayton began to take advantage of some serving errors from her Bulldog opponent, taking the first set.
Dayton seemed more in control in the second set, dropping only one game as she easily finished off the Bulldogs' best bet for a victory.
Senior Ashley Kroneberger swept her set (6-0, 6-0) and, combined with a Provo forfeit due to illness, it gave the Red Devils all three singles matches and Emily Frary and Jordan Hanse won 6-0, 6-0 in the doubles match.
Springville, fresh off a victory over Tooele the day before, seemed content to end the day as quickly as they could.
The Red Devils prepare to face Orem, one of their toughest opponents, today in Orem, while Provo heads to Tooele.
