Salem was first! It is the first Utah County community to receive a multi-product recycle bin from the South Utah County Solid Waste District. The large dumpster is divided into compartments that can be individually emptied. As the bins are put into use, each compartment will be labeled for a specific kind of recyclables. The choices will most likely be metals, paper, and plastic. Bins will be clearly marked for the materials that can be deposited.
Each city in southern Utah County will receive a bin in the near future. As the bins are put into service, the Press will publish locations and the types of materials that can be recycled. These bins are not the only alternatives for easy recycling. Habitat for Humanity (HFHU) will provide containers for aluminum cans to organizations or locations where canned drinks are sold and consumed. Contact Pat Correa at (801)373-7867, (801)344-8527 pat@ hfhuc.org for more information. The Website for Habitat for Humanity is www.hfhuc.org.
Spanish Fork's curbside recycling program is getting closer to being implemented. Nine-hundred thirty-five households have signed up for the service as of August 11. Recycling many materials saves considerable energy in the form or oil or natural gas. These savings mean lower prices for home heating fuels and gasoline. Having more people to recycle benefits everyone.
Many people will be faced with recycling television sets between now and next February. Sony and Waste Management will recycle some brands for free (Sony takes only Sony; Waste Management takes LG, Zenith, and Goldstar products). Both companies will take other brands for modest fees. Television sets and other electronic components may be recycled through the Springville Sorting Station for $3.00. |
