Payson City Council Needs Volunteers, discusses Budget
At the Payson City Council meeting on Wednesday, Aug 20, the council held a hearing on the fiscal year 2008-09 budgets and proposed property tax increase. City Manager Rich Nelson said that every department will experience a cut in their budget. The budget was cut by $639,608.00. There will be no "new-hires" by the city for the coming year and many projects were put on the back burner. Last year Payson issued approximately 150 building permits; this year they have issued only eighteen. They have predicted zero sales tax growth.
Councilman Brent Grotegut attended an energy conference in which the cities were encouraged to find all the missed opportunities that might save energy. Councilman Kim Hancock suggested one way would be to have the garbage truck collect and empty containers from one side of the road only.
Many volunteers are still needed for the Onion Days activities. To volunteer, call Jennifer Anderson at the Recreation Dept at 465-6031 or Debbie at the city office at 465-5217. Scout troops, families and others would be appreciated.
Mayor Burtis Bills met with the Forest Service and they will put a monitor on the soil where the Spring Lake Fire was and that will give us advanced warnings of ground slippage, etc. until the area has one or two years of growth.
There were some safety issues at Jessica's Ranches construction site near the junior high school. Concerns were bought up about Gary's Meat. There was a discussion of throwing candy along the parade route. It was decided that no candy should be thrown from the parade entry or vehicle itself, but people would be allowed to walk beside the parade entry (float) and throw candy. |
