The Spanish Fork Police Department hosted an open house at the new Justice Center on West 100 South last Thursday. Officers gave tours of the new facility to all who came to see the newest addition to the city's infrastructure.
The project was initiated under Mayor Dale Barney back in November 2004. After nearly a year of planning and design, ground was broken for the facility in April, 2007. The building is virtually complete and the Spanish Fork Police should begin moving in this month. Designed not only as a justice center, but also as a "green" facility, the new structure will use ground water and heat pumps for temperature control. It includes office and work space or the police department, city attorney and staff, and the district and juvenile courts. The building was designed to allow growth in the police department without crowding or need for addition. It houses two holding cells to accommodate prisoners until they can be taken to the county jail. Facilities new to the police department include a state-of-the-art workout room, secure evidence storage, adequate file space, and an enclosed sally port for transfer of prisoners to and from vehicles. The court section occupies the second floor and is entirely separate from the police offices. A large reception area in the court section will facilitate public contact functions such as paying fines or giving information. Two courtrooms will accommodate the district court and the juvenile court. Defendants in custody can be taken to the courtrooms directly from the sally port without passing through public areas of the building. |
