When asked what school I attend, I have always answered the obvious and true, "Orem High School."
But lately I've added the phrase, "or what's left of it," to remind my inquisitors of the demolition taking place in preparation for the construction of a brand new school -- a presumably "new and improved" Orem High.
There are some noticeable changes at OHS this year, such as the absence of the parking lot, driving range, and the Little Theatre. However, these changes won't interfere with all the unique and sometimes quirky features of Orem High that make it special.
For instance, those awesome lockers that date our school back to the '50s. Each locker is an unintentionally different shade of blue. The patchwork of blue stripes stands in the OHS halls as a reminder to the students that much is still the same.
There's also the gigantic aquarium near the main entrance. Over the years, it's worked on and off, but it's finally working and filled again. At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, but thanks to our science club, the tank that sat vacant for years now holds living and swimming fish -- there until they're moved, of course.
Like many of my classmates, I'm proud of Orem High and its legacy of excellence in academics, athletics, and other areas.
These are things of quality and importance in the big picture. While searching for a parking place and gazing into the gaping hole where the out buildings used to be, I have to remind myself of the big picture often.
This is only the beginning of significant change at Orem High, but that doesn't mean that traditions and memories that exist are changing, too.
Just like the ubiquitous lockers, students are still making the most out of all that remains at OHS. |
