MT. PLEASANT--Senator Robert F. Bennett made a stop in Mt. Pleasant on Aug. 25 to see some of the progress cities have made with grant money available from the designation of the Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area (MPNHA). Bennett also received an update on the management plan.
Mt. Pleasant serves as the chair community for the designation that spans from Fairview to Kanab, a stretch of 250 miles, which involves six counties. Mt. Pleasant received a $96,000 grant from Preserve America that has helped the community with entry signs, painting of the old armory and the spectacular 3-D mural depicting soldiers from every conflict that Sanpete County men and women have participated.
Entry signs like those seen at each end of Mt. Pleasant with the Preserve America logo have also been constructed in Salina, Big Rock Candy Mountain, Marysvale, Panguitch, Orderville and Kanab.
The grant also helped pay for two DVDs, Utah Blackhawk War narrated by Merrill Osmond and Stories along Highway 89, narrated by Spence Kinard; and a heritage products brochure.
With the designation, Manti has received about $200,000 additional money toward the building of the Central Utah Heritage Center, a $3 million project that has already raised close to $1 million.
"I have fond memories traveling down Highway 89 visiting with mayors and commissioners along the way. Back then there was no interstate, so we traveled down Highway 89.
It was always a good experience and with the designation finally coming about, it will allow others to also enjoy what the area has to offer." |
