One change helps Provo edge Timpview Print E-mail
Jordan Christiansen - Daily Herald

After losing its first two games in Region 7 play, Provo needed to make some changes. Pulling back last year's leading goalscorer to the midfield and sending a first-year player to take her place didn't seem to be it.

But that's why Chris Chilcoat's a soccer coach.

Gina Soto, switching places with Amber Wadsworth up front, scored her second goal of the season midway through the second half, lifting the homestanding Bulldogs to a 1-0 region win over Timpview at Provo on Thursday.

Soto turned deep in T'Bird territory and fired a shot across the goal that finally broke a scoreless tie.

"She's a great little player," Chilcoat said. "She dribbles well. She's new to our program and she'll be a great asset done the road. It's great to have her on our team."

Wadsworth, who led 4A with 20 goals last season and was tied for the second-most already this year, directed the offense from the mid. At first, the changes, along with a tough Timpview defense, kept the Bulldogs rusty, but ultimately the change worked.

"We changed some things up and came out a little tentative," Chilcoat said. "At the half I told them, 'We've just got to have fun. Just play soccer. Forget about everything I said.' It was a good win. We needed that."

The remainder of the game was one for the defensive enthusiast, with Timpview getting the best chances on goal. T'Bird sophomore forward Kelsey Badger had two different one-on-one situations with Bulldog goalkeeper Katie Liston, but Liston denied Badger on diving saves each time.

"I thought we created a lot of chances," said Timpview coach Adam Sanchez. "I thought we were the most dangerous team, we just didn't put them away. We dominated for good stretches of the match, so we'll take confidence from this loss."

In goal for Timpview was senior Kimmy Bramble. With their starting keeper out with a broken toe and the backup ill, Bramble stepped in and held her own despite not having played the keeper position.

"She'll do anything for the team," Sanchez said. "She'll die for the team and I think all the players would die for her. The defense played for her and fought hard for her."

But it was the defense and goalkeeping of Provo (4-3-0, 1-2-0) that earned the shutout and the win. Liston, along with Sepi Ika, Whitney Hoopes, Hillary Jarman and Jessie Andersen, all of whom are seniors, held solid despite the Timpview (1-3-1, 1-1-0) pressure.

• Tooele 2, Payson 1: At Tooele, Kahri Golden and Airica Stewart both scored for the Buffaloes (3-3-1, 1-2-0) to keep the Lions (1-6-0, 0-3-0) winless in Region 7. Ellary Swenson scored the Lions' lone goal.

• Waterford 4, American Fork 1: At American Fork, Kimi Miyashima had a hat trick (three goals) and Cami Phillips had two assists to lead Waterford (5-1-0) past American Fork (0-4-0).

After going into halftime down 2-0, Spanish Fork (4-2-0) played with more energy in the second half. But it wasn't enough. Heather Saxton scored the Warriors' third goal while Courtney Acosta notched the lone goal for the Dons. Prior to Thursday afternoon's matchup, Taylorsville had outscored its opponents 20-0.

• Lehi 1, Wasatch 0: At Heber City, senior Alyssa Hill slashed through the Wasps' defense and scored the game's lone goal with seven minutes left in the contest. In a defensive struggle, Wasatch (2-3-0) never really had a scoring chance, managing just four shots. Lindsay Judd had the assist on the score and goalie Briar Sands got the win for the still-undefeated Pioneers (4-0-1).

• ALA 2, Layton Christian 1: At Spanish Fork, the Eagles led 2-1 at halftime and then hung on the rest of the way to edge Layton Christian (0-1-0, 0-1-0).
