An elderly Provo woman's Friday morning trip to physical therapy ended abruptly when her car crashed into the building.
Provo Police Department Sgt. Matt Siufanua said 79-year-old Peggy Wilkinson was driving into a parking spot at the Central Utah Clinic on 500 West when she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes.
"The car penetrated into the building beyond approximately 1 foot," he said.
The stone facade, a window and an inside wall were significantly damaged in the crash, as was the woman's car. Siufanua said the woman was treated at the scene for bruises, but no other injuries were reported.
Siufanua said elderly drivers are not always cited in such accidents. Police will cite the drivers when it is deserved, but charges are often postponed until the drivers have undergone further evaluation of their abilities.
"Typically in a case like this there's no charges," he said.
Nathan Smith, facilities manager at the clinic, said he has not yet received any estimates on how much it will cost to repair the damage. For now, workers have patched the wall with plywood until a bid is received for the repairs.
Smith said no patients were in the room on the other side of the accident, and no one inside the building was hurt.
"She just went through and busted a hole in [the wall]," he said. |
