down the middle to spark a 4-1 BYU run that cut the lead in half. However, another point-for-point tradeoff spelled doom for the Cougars as they could not overcome the deficit, falling 25-19.
Missouri came out firing in Game 3, to take a 5-1 lead. BYU stormed back with a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 7-6 ,then kept the momentum going with back-to-back blocks and two straight aces from junior transfer Morgan Lloyd. The string of points continued for the home team as the run grew to 17-0 and the lead grew to 20-6 in a dominating performance.
With their backs to the wall, the Tigers began Game 4 with a 6-2 lead and held the Cougars at bay to a 17-13 advantage. BYU clawed its way back with three straight points and had a chance to knot the score, but three straight Missouri scores once again had the Tigers in control and they went on to win.
Marquardt got BYU going in the fifth game, but the two teams battled back and forth to a 5-5 tie. Missouri took a 7-5 advantage, but Walker answered with a kill. A BYU service error gave the Tigers an 8-6 lead when the two teams traded sides. Missouri had a 13-11 lead, but junior Ashton Hansen Hosford sparked a 3-0 Cougar run that gave BYU match point at 14-13. The Tigers responded with two straight scores to earn their own match point. But Porter put one away to stave off the Tigers and then helped BYU score the next two points to take set five, 17-15.
In the first BYU match of the day, the Cougars chalked up a (21-25, 26-24, 27-25, 25-21) against the Tulane Green Wave.¬
"I like the maturity we showed in tight sets," said BYU coach Shay Goulding. "It's good to defend the Smith Fieldhouse. We learned things and got progressively smarter as the match went on."
• UVU soccer: At Orem, Jennifer Lohner scored two goals on two assists from Katey Turner as Utah Valley ran away from North Dakota 5-0 at Clyde Field.
The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead into the half and used a spurt early in the second to put the game away, earning their first win in a season-opener since 2003.
"It's great to see the girls come out, work hard and get the job done," said UVU coach Brent Anderson. "I like how we corrected some things at the half and came out fired up in the second half."
Shantae Adams-Yeats scored the first goal in the 14th minute when she held off her defender from about 10 yards out and booted the ball into the lower right corner.
The score stayed 1-0 until early into the second half when UVU scored twice in the 47th minute in just a 15 second span. Nicole Archibald scored the second goal of the game, and the first of her career, after a corner kick was deflected in her direction. Lohner scored her first goal as a Wolverine on an assist from Turner just seconds later.
Lohner scored again less than 10 minutes later on the second assist from Turner before Jenni Clough scored her first goal of the year and 21st of her career to cap the scoring.
Keepers Mallory Schott and Hailey Brown both had diving saves in goal to preserve the shutout.
• UVU cross country: At Pocatello, Idaho, Utah Valley's men's and women's cross country teams finished second and third, respectively, as they began the 2008 season at the Idaho State Invitational.
"It was a pretty good day for us overall," said UVU coach Scott Houle. "Our men's team ran a really great race today, and overall they really impressed me. They showed me just how good they will be this season. Our women's team got out to a little bit of a slow start, and it was hard for them to play catch up in the shorter 3K race."
Tthe men totaled 41 points and were led from a fourth-place finish from Joshua McCabe, a freshman from Springville. Other top-10 finishers for the men were Jared Keller (seventh), a redshirt sophomore from Orem, and Danny Moody (ninth), a redshirt senior from Provo.
The Wolverine women finished in third place with a team total of 68 points and were led by Aleina Eisenhauer, a sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., who finished in 13th place individually. Krystal Harper, a freshman from Orem, finished right behind her Eisenhauer in 14th place.
Overall, Southern Utah's teams won in both the men's (25) and women's (30) competitions. Idaho State was second in the men's (86) and women's (38) races.
• UVU women's volleyball: At Salt Lake City, the Utah Valley women's volleyball team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 25-18, 17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-0 0-25, 25-22, 0-15 loss to Santa Clara at the Ute Invitational.
Redshirt freshman Jaicee Kuresa tallied 14 kills to lead Wolverine attackers. She also recorded six block assists. Sophomore Kayli Broadbent and freshman Chelsey Garfield also racked up nine kills apiece. Utah Valley hit .203 with 12 total team blocks compared to Santa Clara's .220 and six total team blocks.
"It's unfortunate that this is the way this match turned out because I thought our team really battled," said Utah Valley coach Sam Atoa after the match. "The result is not a fair indication of of the match went. We have to live with it and learn from it, though. That's all we can ask, and that's what we'll do."
The Wolverines continue their season next weekend at the Jayhawk Invitational with matches at Kansas and against Central Florida on Friday and against Oregon on Saturday. |
