Viking spikers turn up heat to defeat Skyline Print E-mail
Ryan Comer - Herald Correspondent

Danika Mendivil looked at the scoreboard and noticed something wasn't quite right.

Yes, her Pleasant Grove Vikings were leading the third game of a match against Skyline, but only by a single point at 13-12.

After defeating the Eagles in the first two sets, one might think it odd that Mendivil and the rest of the Vikings were upset about this. But they were.

So much so that they decided to turn up the heat. The Vikings scored 12 of the next 15 points to win the set and sweep the match 25-11, 25-12 and 25-15 Thursday at Pleasant Grove.

Mendivil recorded a team-high 14 kills.

"Kami (McFarland) was giving me really good sets," Mendivil said.

Senior outside hitter Brooke McAllister, who is currently being recruited by the University of Utah, added eight kills of her own.

"You can't do anything unless you can put the ball away," McAllister said.

The Vikings spent all evening Thursday putting the ball away against the Eagles.

Even coach Jamie Schapper was impressed.

"They really showed what they were capable of," Schapper said. "You can really see they mesh well."

In the first game, the Vikings scored the first four points - three of which came because of blocks. The Vikings finished the night with nine blocks total.

After watching Skyline trim the lead to 5-3, the Vikings pulled away, scoring the next five points. A few minutes later, with the lead at 13-6, the Vikings went on another run, this time scoring six-consecutive points . The Vikings finished Game 1 with three straight points.

In the second game, the Vikings soared out to an 8-1 advantage, at one point scoring seven consecutive. The Eagles managed to trim the lead to just 9-5, but like in the Game 1, couldn't maintain the pressure. At 9-5, the Vikings went on another 7-0 surge to all but end the Eagles' hopes.

The Vikings were ranked No. 1 heading into the season, but Schapper said tonight's victory was important for confidence nonetheless.

"The girls needed to prove it to themselves," she said.

With the loss, the Eagles fell to 2-7 in the preseason.
