COUNTYWIDE
• William A. Sederburg, commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education, announced two appointments to the Office of the Commissioner today. Gregory L. Stauffer, currently the vice president and chief of staff at Southern Utah University, has been named associate commissioner for finance and facilities and will oversee all of the budgeting facilities function for USHE. Cameron Martin, currently assistant to the president for institutional development and planning at Utah Valley University, has been named assistant commissioner for planning and administration and will oversee the coordination of department programs as well as strategic planning functions within USHE. These positions, previously held by Mark Spencer and David Doty, respectively, are important to achieving the strategic objectives of USHE.
"I am impressed with Commissioner Sederburg's initial progress and his active approach to further improving our higher education system", said Jed Pitcher, chairman of the board of regents. "The talent these two individuals bring to the Commissioner's Office will play an important role in executing USHE's goals and objectives."
• The Utah Department of Health invites Utah fourth- and fifth-graders to design radio, TV and billboard ads that will convince other kids to never start using tobacco. The 11th annual Truth From Youth contest in called "Maybe You Should Try Advertising," and targets young people and challenging their anti-tobacco advertising savvy.
Fourth- and fifth-grade students may enter Maybe You Should Try Advertising by drawing or writing a billboard, TV or radio ad. Best in show will win $400, and the ad will be professionally produced. Additional prizes include $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place in each category. Entries are due by March 6, 2009 and more information is available at www.youthagainsttobacco.com.

• Forbes Elementary's Fall Fair will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 300 N. 200 East. Tickets are available at the door, three for $1, and a whole pizza with five drinks for $10. There will be fun, games and prizes for the whole family. The community is invited.

• After 24 years of dedicated service, Jerry Spanos, founder and CEO of Heritage Schools, Inc., has announced his retirement. Established by Spanos in 1984, Heritage School serves as a psychiatric residential center for adolescents with emotional, behavioral, academic and substance abuse issues. Today at 6:30 p.m., the school will host a celebration in honor of Spanos's influence in the community, and in the lives of the thousands of students and families he has aided. The event will be held at Heritage Schools, 5600 N. Heritage School Drive in Provo. Entertainment will be provided. |
