Pleasant Grove's defense wasn't quite sure what to do with Spanish Fork quarterback Breck Lewis.
When he dropped back to pass, he gashed the Vikings with his arm, throwing for 303 yards and four touchdowns.
When he took off and ran with the ball, he racked up 159 yards rushing and scored another touchdown.
But as good as Lewis was on Friday night, he was no match for what Pleasant Grove did in late in the first half. The Vikings averaged a touchdown a minute in the final four minutes of the half that keyed Pleasant Grove's 56-34 win over Spanish Fork.
The Vikings scored three times in 90 seconds to take a 35-8 lead and then delivered what proved to be the fatal blow with another touchdown with 30 seconds left in the half to take a 42-8 lead at intermission.
"I just felt good about every one of them (touchdowns) and it's a good thing we had them for the second half. Obviously we needed those points to win the ball game," said Pleasant Grove coach Dale Sampson. "We knew they were going to make their plays. They run a pretty good offense. We probably just didn't do as well containing and making our defensive plays in the second half."
Pleasant Grove started to pull away late in the second quarter when quarterback Dallas Lloyd threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Marshall Nielson at the 4:03 mark to give the Vikings a 21-8 lead.
After a Spanish Fork three-and-out, the Dons defense was put on the spot. Pleasant Grove got the ball to LeSean Wilcox, who took handoff and turned it into a 49-yard touchdown run with 2:44 left in the half.
The Vikings got a break when a Lewis pass went off the hands of his favorite target Richard Wilson and into the hands of Joey Owens, who took the gift 30 yards for a touchdown.
Suddenly, Pleasant Grove was in control at 35-8, but the Vikings weren't done. Owens intercepted a Lewis pass at the Spanish Fork 35 and returned it to the 23. It set up a 6-yard touchdown run from Wilcox to give the Vikings a bulging 42-8 lead at the half.
But what looked like might be a blowout, turned into a shootout, because in addition to trying to contain Lewis, Pleasant Grove's defense realized it had another problem--Wilson.
Lewis hooked up with Wilson for touchdown passes of 29 and 35 yards. But just when it looked like the Dons would make a game of it, Wilcox got another carry and Spanish Fork could not account for his speed. He broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run with 4:55 left in the third quarter.
Lewis answered with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Chase Loftin, but Wilcox ran past the Dons defense again, this time for a 40-yard touchdown run that gave the Vikings a 56-27 lead to end the scoring in the third quarter.
"I think we were pretty fortunate. They had a couple of turnovers and we kept putting drives in," Sampson said. "Things were going our way in the first half. It was probably the best first half we've had on offense, defense and special teams. I don't know if it was lack of execution on our part, but they definitely stepped up. They didn't lie down one bit and brought it in the second half."
Pleasant Grove made a statement by scoring on its first possession. The Vikings took the ball 65 yards and scored on a 3-yard run from Owens.
After a 7-yard Spanish Fork punt, Pleasant Grove used the short field to punch in another score.
Facing a 3rd-and-5 at the
Spanish Fork looked like it might have regained the momentum when it came back and cut the lead to 14-8.
The Dons started an efficient drive on their own 20 and marched down the field and scored on a Lewis 25-yard run, but it didn't seem to matter what Lewis did on the night because the Spanish Fork's defense couldn't stop Wilcox, who ran through the Dons defense for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Owens had 117 yards rushing and scored on both sides of the ball. Wilson finished with 96 yards receiving and two touchdowns for Spanish Fork.
The win put Pleasant Grove in the Region 4 driver's seat. The Vikings are now 3-0, while Spanish Fork dropped to 2-1. |
