Elation.
That was the feeling on the sidelines and in the stands at Salem Hills as the hometown Skyhawks pounded the visiting Carbon Dinos 42-6, notching the first win in the school's short history.
Salem Hills (1-6, 1-2 Region 8) relied heavily on the legs of quarterback Josh Adams and running back Kolapa Wolfgramm, as its defense stymied the Dinos (0-8, 0-3). Adams carried the ball 12 times for 121 yards and four touchdowns, while Wolfgramm ran for 131 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. Wolfgramm also contributed on the defensive side of the ball with an interception as well.
Adams got Salem Hills on the board first when he scrambled 14 yards in the first quarter.
Minutes later, facing a fourht-and-long situation, Adams avoided a sack and scampered 23 yards for another touchdown to put the Skyhawks up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
With just under six minutes left in the 1st half, Salem Hills' Matt Lundell took a handoff up the middle and bowled over Dino defenders on his way to an 11-yard touchdown.
After a big punt return by Josh Warr set up the Skyhawks deep in Carbon territory, junior Wolfgramm plunged over the goal line from one yard out. A two-point conversion run by Payton Jermaine made the score 29-0.
After another Carbon turnover deep in its own territory, it was Adams again who scored on an option keeper from one yard out for his third touchdown of the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same as Adams found the end zone for the fourth time in the game on a 9-yard keeper.
The Skyhawk defense, anchored by Phil Sorensen with two sacks, kept Carbon out of the end zone for the majority of the game. It was not until there were only two minutes left in the game that Carbon finally found paydirt as quarterback Blake Najera found Tyson Stevens behind the Skyhawk secondary for a 40-yard touchdown strike.
Salem Hills head coach Monte Morgan said he was happy for his team.
"We've had some frustrations this year," he said. "They've worked hard, and they deserved this."
Morgan was also complementary of his quarterback.
"He's made plays for us all year," he added. "He just shows a lot of heart and has a good understanding of what we're trying to do offensively."
Adams, who is a junior, gave credit to his big hogs up front for clearing up running lanes.
"Our line did a heckuva job," he said. "We were able to do whatever we wanted to out there."
The Skyhawks will have a chance to collect their second win ever when they host undefeated Delta on Wednesday. |
