Springville's Garrido, Smith advance to 4A tennis semifinals Print E-mail
Ryan Comer - Daily Herald

As the Region 7 top seed at No. 2 doubles heading into Friday's 4A tennis tournament, you'd expect Springville's Carolina Garrido and Courtney Smith to have pretty lofty expectations.

So it might come as quite a surprise that the pair was overjoyed, almost beyond words, after winning two matches Friday to advance to the semifinals today.

"It's freaking awesome," a jubilant Smith said after she and her partner defeated a duo from Mountain Crest 6-1 7-5 in the quarterfinals. "(Our goal) was just to win the first game."

Garrido and Smith had no trouble in their first match of the day against West High's Alice Lin and Janice Chen, winning that match 6-0 6-1.

"We wanted it a lot more," Garrido said. "We were focused."

Garrido and Smith will now get ready to play a Sky View pair -- the No. 1 seed from Region 5 -- in the semifinals this morning. Sky View's duo defeated teams from Cottonwood and Mountain View to make the semifinals.

Springville wasn't the only school from Region 7 putting together nice performances. All three of Orem's singles' players -- Andie Young, Kelsie Craig and Courtney Kezerian -- stormed through the first two rounds Friday afternoon to advance to today's semis, putting the Tigers in good shape for a run at the team title. Craig didn't give up even one game, winning 6-0, 6-0 in both matches.

"I hit really good serves and approach shots," Craig said.

Craig understands the competition will be even tougher today, but is confident nonetheless.

"I'll be ready," she said.

Orem's first doubles team of Callie Craig and Candice Gurr also made it to the semis after defeating Murray and Bountiful, although Bountiful proved to be quite the challenge.

After winning the first set 6-3 and jumping ahead 2-0 in the second, the Tigers had a chance to make it 3-0. But trailing 40-15, the Braves scored four straight points to win the set. With a surge of momentum, Bountiful went on to win the second set 6-3. But Orem refused to give up and won the final set 6-3.

Mountain View entered the tournament with three No. 4 seeds and two No. 3 seeds, but couldn't advance anyone to the semifinals.

Bruin head coach Matt McKell was proud of his girls nonetheless, and said that with freshman Amy Spencer and sophomores Berkley Baum and Anne Bartlome returning next year, things may turn out even better.

"They're going to be the future of Mountain View," McKell said of Spencer, Baum and Bartlome.

All three of Timpview's singles players, as well as its No. 1 doubles team, entered Friday with a No. 2 seed from Region 7, and although all of them won their first match, none could advance to the semis.
