CONTINUING
10,000 B.C. (1 hr., 49 min.; PG-13 for sequences of intense action and violence) A babelicious cavegirl (Camilla Belle) is stolen from her muscular, jut-jawed, mammoth-hunting BFF, D'Leh (Steven Strait). D'Leh d'cides that the only thing to d'o is to d'liver his d'amsel from d'bad guys. It's as silly as it sounds but director Roland Emmerich does know how to do spectacle. [C-]
21 (2 hrs., 3 min.; PG-13 for some violence, and sexual content including partial nudity) Based on, but not truly inspired by, the true story of the MIT Blackjack Team, "21" takes a thoroughly by-the-numbers approach to its card-counting characters and their Las Vegas entanglements. Flashy and fun, but with nothing of substance and nothing that surprises. [C+]
BABY MAMA (1 hr., 39 min.; PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, language and a drug reference) Tina Fey's smart, graceful performance is easily the best ingredient in the lazily familiar recipe for this comedy about every woman's urge to be a mother. The plot is more or less one cliche after another, but Fey and co-stars Amy Poehler and Greg Kinnear will draw you in anyway. [B-]
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN (2 hrs., 24 min.; PG for epic battle action and violence) This violent, exciting sequel to "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" seems more naturally suited to the mundane realm of Moremoolah than the magical, allegorical kingdom of Narnia. Characters old and new unite to fight a visually spectacular, morally simplistic battle of good and evil. [B]
HORTON HEARS A WHO! (1 hr., 28 min.; G) Honorable Horton, the elephantine softie who is loyal to the tiny beings only his enormous ears can detect, is as endearing as ever in this feature-length adaptation of the famous fable by latter-day Aesop Dr. Seuss. While a bit long and sometimes silly, the film is delightfully animated and frequently very funny. A fine family entertainment. [A-]
INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2 hrs., 2 min.; PG-13 for adventure violence and scary images) He's back! Indiana Jones's famous fedora fits Harrison Ford as well as it ever has. A lot of the plotting of Dr. J's latest adventure has a logic-defying, seat-of-the-pants heedlessness, but the movie is fast, fun and funny, with great interaction between its stars. [A]
IRON MAN (2 hrs.; PG-13 for some intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and brief suggestive content) Giving the freshest superhero performance in many a moon, Robert Downey Jr. electrifies this fast, funny chronicle of the Marvel Comics cover boy who fights injustice with the power of heavy metal (and some cool weapons technology). [B+]
MADE OF HONOR (1 hr., 39 min.; PG-13 for sexual content and language) With marital hijinks that feel more or less nakedly thieved from "My Best Friend's Wedding" and a tone, structure and performances/characters that seem recycled from everything else in its tired genre, "Made to Honor" is a romantic comedy that's strictly for fans of Patrick Dempsey. [C+]
NIM'S ISLAND (1 hr., 35 min.; PG for mild adventure action and brief language) Jodie Foster plays an agoraphobic adventure novelist summoned to a mysterious island by her littlest fan (Abigail Breslin) after the poor thing's father goes missing. Adults will probably find this one a tough sit, but the lively story and characters will be fun for kids. [B-]
PROM NIGHT (1 hr., 28 min.; PG-13 for violence and terror, some sexual material, underage drinking, and language) It's the most romantic night of the year for the McStudents at McMovie McHigh School. Only, there's a McMurderous McSlasher on the loose at the swanky hotel where their prom is being held! Blah. No smarts. No scares. No suspense. No reason to buy a ticket. [D]
SEX AND THE CITY (2 hrs., 22 min.; R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity and language) The clothes! The shoes! The sass! The (um, "booty")! The magic is back, sort of, as the bright-lights-and-big-city sexcapades of the seminal HBO series leap to the big screen. The actresses know their beats, but the formula feels a little too familiar and the drama drags on and on. [C+]
STOP-LOSS (1 hr., 43 min.; R for graphic violence and pervasive language) Taking the bull by the horns, an Army sergeant and Iraq War returnee goes on the lam to resist being forcibly reenlisted in this clear-eyed call for empathy with the men and women fighting for U.S. interests in the Middle East. Ryan Phillippe gives a strong lead performance. [B+]
THE STRANGERS (1 hr., 25 min.; R for violence/terror and language) A trio of hoodlums terrorize two young vacationers staying at a remote cabin. The opening scenes of the movie essentially give away its ending, which sort of, ahem, kills most of the tension from the start. The violence-without-motive premise is chilling, but everything else is hack-and-slash-by-numbers. [D]
TYLER PERRY'S MEET THE BROWNS (1 hr., 40 min.; PG-13 for drug content, language including sexual references, thematic elements and brief violence) Single mom Brenda (Angela Bassett) finds her life in shambles and takes a cathartic trip to Georgia following her estranged father's death. Because critics tend to hate Tyler Perry, this film was not screened for them. So there.
UNDER THE SAME MOON (1 hr., 50 min.; PG-13 for some mature thematic elements) A young lad from south of the border discovers that it's a long and winding road from Mexico to Los Angeles after he runs away to find his mother. A warmhearted film that inspires sympathy for illegal immigrants without leaning on the message button too hard. [B+]
VANTAGE POINT (1 hr., 30 min.; PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, some disturbing images and brief strong language) The gimmicky structure of this tense, exciting presidential assassination thriller -- flashbacks show the story's key events from multiple viewpoints -- works quite well. Strong acting from a great cast (led by Dennis Quaid) shores up weak characters. [B+]
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS (1 hr., 38 min.; PG-13 for some sexual and crude content, and language, including a drug reference) Two losers (Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher) find a lot of luck, as well as each other, in Sin City. What happens, though, is that after some initially funny, sorta fresh feuding over a disputed jackpot, the movie pours on the same old rancid sentiment. [C-]

COLLEGE ROAD TRIP (1 hr., 23 min.; G) The era of Martin Lawrence the Disneyfied, Totally Defanged Wussbag rolls forth in this tiresome, shrill daddy-daughter bonding comedy. Lawrence is a over-protective pop who makes a last-ditch attempt to convince daddy's little girl (Raven-Symon) to enroll at Hometown U instead of (gulp!) Georgetown. With Donny Osmond! [D] Cinemark 9, Cinemark 10
JUMPER (1 hr., 28 min.; PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence, some language and brief sexuality) The tender story of a kid who can teleport and the freaky white-haired hardcase who'd like to kill him because of that. Tight action scenes and some cool location shooting crank up the film a few notches past the actual potential of its dumbed-down, sometimes sketchy story. [B-] Cinemark 9, Valley Fair 9
MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY (1 hr., 41 min.; PG-13 for some partial nudity and innuendo) The old-fashioned charm of this proper British farce (perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of drama and romance) is cranked up by splendid performances from Frances McDormand, as the titular personal secretary, and Amy Adams, as the cabaret singer who benefits from Miss P's good sense. [A] Cinemark 10
THE RUINS (1 hr., 37 min.; R for strong violence and gruesome images, language, some sexuality and nudity) American kids on vacation in Mexico make a foolish decision to visit an archaeological site, where they become entangled in a horror that slumbers beneath an ancient pyramid. Despite a lack of originality and buckets of gore, the movie has a frequently satisfying tension. [C+] Valley Fair 9
SON OF RAMBOW (1 hr., 36 min.; PG-13 for some violence and reckless behavior) Two British lads, one shy and the other geeky, bond over the Sylvester Stallone movie "First Blood," then decide to produce their own sequel to it. A giddy, silly warmhearted coming-of-age caper, and a treat for anyone who likes a mix of dry humor and outrageous goofiness. [B+] Megaplex 17, Megaplex 20
SPEED RACER (2 hrs., 9 min.; PG for sequences of action, some violence, language and brief smoking) The gleaming, Day-Glo production design and eye-filling visual effects of this cartoon adaptation are its biggest asset, but a silly story laid out in exhaustive expository keeps everything stuck in second gear. Like Sammy Hagar, Speed Racer can't drive 55. [D] Cinemark 24, Megaplex 17, Megaplex 20
SUPERHERO MOVIE (1 hr., 25 min.; PG-13 for crude and sexual content, comic violence, drug references and language) From some of the people who brought you the comedy classic "Airplane!," but none of the people who brought you "Epic Movie" and "Date Movie," comes this spoof of superhero movies in general and "Spider-Man" in particular. Better than most of the thuddingly junk in this genre. [C] Valley Fair 9
