Welcome to fabulous ... Egypt? With a taste of Las Vegas, that is. Right here in "Family City USA."
The SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre is kicking off its production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" Friday night. This isn't, however, the Donny Osmond-as-Joseph classic configuration of "Dreamcoat" that you may be familiar with. This time around, the show is being done Las Vegas style.
"Folks who come to see the show will sense the unity in the cast and the fact that we're telling a story about the importance of redemption and family, and we're doing it in a way that most people may not be accustomed to seeing 'Joseph,' " said Jim Murphy, who plays Potiphar in the show. "But the underlying theme of the story is very powerful. People will go away from the show feeling really, really good."
When Jeremy Showgren was hired to direct "Dreamcoat" for SCERA, he decided he wanted to put a different spin on the famous musical. The set suggests the Las Vegas Strip, Joseph's jealous brothers are seen as servers at Jacob & Sons Restaurant in the land of Canaan and instead of one narrator, there are three -- patterned after the Supremes.
"I haven't changed any of the music or anything like that," Showgren said. "I haven't added anything or taken anything away. I've tried to just focus on different aspects. Joseph still has his coat, and it will open up really big and cover most of the stage. It's still got the traditional elements, but it's really a new spin on an old classic.
"I feel like everyone loves the Donny Osmond version, as do I, but I have that on DVD, so I can pop it in anytime. Why would I want to pay money to go see it on stage? I thought, 'Let's do something fresh ... and put a new spin on it.' "
The musical features singing and dancing throughout the entire performance with choreography by Shawn Mortensen.
Although Showgren has put a new twist on the musical, the moral of the story remains the same. "The thing that I enjoy most about the story is that, hidden between all that glitter is a story about redemption and forgiveness," he said. "I think that's kind of why I'm attracted to this show. It's such a fun show ... but it's got heart, and it's got meat to it."
Murphy said the show has something for everyone and that audience members can take things they learn with them and apply them in their lives.
"There are themes that, if people incorporate [them] into their daily lives, they will be better people and they will find a lot more joy and happiness," Murphy said. Probably the best part is that you leave this production and you walk away happy."
