Have you ever drawn a picture, made a sculpture or taken a photo and had your parents say, "This should be in a museum"? At the Springville Museum of Art you can actually hang your pictures in their children's gallery!

My family has visited lots of art museums in my life and we added the Springville museum to our list this week. One of the fun things to do at art museums is to take notes or pictures of the art and then go home and re-create the pictures! If you look closely while you're there you'll find pictures made entirely of little dots of paint and pictures that use great big, wild paint strokes. My favorite pictures are the ones that are a little hard to figure out what they are. These are usually called Impressionist paintings. My Nana and Scott [my stepdad] say they're called that because they just give you an impression of what the artist was thinking. I like to look at these pictures and imagine what they're supposed to be.

Right now the museum has a special exhibit on religious pieces. Many of these were made by people right here in Utah. There are paintings and sculptures as well.

Two of my favorite sculptures at the museum were the guy lying on a bench (we took a picture of me imitating the sculpture) and a crazy looking piece that was made of metal and had lots of running water. Everyone knows I can't live without water! I couldn't swim inside the sculpture but it was fun to look at and REALLY big.

In my opinion, the very best art museums have kid areas where we can actually create things. Springville has a great kid area. They couldn't get me to leave! You can draw pictures and hang them up, play with marionettes (that's a great new vocabulary word!) and many, many other things. This is a good area for kids of all ages, even your little brothers and sisters.

Sometimes people think that art museums will be boring. They're not! Take your family to Springville today and enjoy great art right here in Utah Valley! When you get home have fun re-creating the pictures and making up your own!
