A dozen accidents in the Spanish Fork area left one person dead and several injured Friday night.
The fatal accident happened at 8:20 p.m. in Spanish Fork Canyon on U.S. Highway 6.
A male passenger in his 30s was declared dead at the scene and had to be extricated from his truck. Two others were injured. The driver in his late teens was listed in critical condition. A young teenage female passenger was listed as serious.
UHP Sgt. Wade Breur said that the accident happened at the Covered Bridge turnout. A truck pulling a boat rolled over, crushing the passenger side. The boat trailer detached and continued on the road for 180 feet, but didn't hit anyone.
Troopers are not sure what caused the truck to roll. They were not aware at press time where the truck was going or coming from.
Eleven accidents piled up on Interstate 15 earlier in the day.
The first accident, a rollover, happened at 4:30 p.m. near the Spanish Fork Main Street exit on northbound Interstate 15.
Within an hour, 10 crashes followed; two involved semi-trucks.
"Basically rubbernecking from the first one, and once we had the two cars go into the median, they basically set up the others," said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Shawn Thomas.
Thomas said that the second accident on I-15 happened in the median at the base of an overpass. Drivers couldn't see the slowdown until it was too late, and had to slam on their brakes. Some didn't make it in time and crashed instead.
UHP reported six injuries in the 11 crashes.
All six were transported to Mountain View Hospital in Payson. One female was in critical condition with head injuries, but Thomas said that she is expected to recover.
Drugs and alcohol were not believed to be involved for any of the accidents Friday night.
Utah County Highway Patrol responded to the accidents, but Thomas said that the Utah County Sheriff's Office assisted elsewhere as back-up.
