UPDATE: UCAT president resigns after audit

Due to criticism stemming from a state audit, the president of the Utah College of Applied Technology has stepped down.

Robert Brems has been on paid leave since last month. He is also the former president of the Mountainland Applied Technology College. Wednesday, in a letter to Commissioner of Higher Education Richard Kendell, the state board of regents and the UCAT board of trustees, Brems resigned.

"The recent report and findings of the State Auditor have caused a disruption in the operations of the Utah College of Applied Technology. Because of my dedication and allegiance to UCAT, and to alleviate further disruption, I believe it is in the best interest of the college for me to step down at this time," Brems said, according to a statement by the state board of regents.

The commissioner said he has accepted the resignation. Brems will remain on paid administrative leave until Oct. 31. Jared Haines will continue to serve as interim president until the state board of regents fills the position.

The State Auditor's Office released its report in August. The additional review by the state board of regents should be completed and released next week.
