It turns out the vice president is a low-maintenance guest, except for all the security.
Dick Cheney is the scheduled commencement speaker at BYU on Thursday, so security will be tight.
There will be no processional at the event, which is a tradition at the school. Graduates and their families will have to get to the Marriott Center two hours early, go through a security screening and then wait.
Once Cheney gets to the event, he will be low key.
BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said that Cheney has not made any special requests for refreshments or accommodations.
Tickets are required for the commencement, which is atypical. Jenkins said there will be several volunteers and employees who will staff the security checkpoints. Graduates and faculty who are going to wear robes have been instructed to approach the security screening with robes carried on their right arm.
No signs will be allowed in the Marriott Center, as well as coolers, artificial noisemakers, banners, flags, sticks or poles, umbrellas, laser pointers, strollers, balloons, weapons or laptops. Cell phones, iPods and cameras will be allowed.
Campus employees who aren't involved in commencement can leave at noon.
Police say security in Provo will be increased that day, but probably not enough to be inconvenient.
There weren't any planned road closures as of Monday. If there are going to be any they will only be for a short period.
Most security is being taken care of by the Secret Service. For example, they will do advance background checks on members of the press who cover the commencement speech.
Former presidential candidate Ralph Nader will be speaking that evening at the McKay Events Center at UVSC. UVSC interim Police Chief Chris Rockwood said security has not been increased for him, except at the airport.
