Provo tightens budget

PROVO, Utah -- A shortfall in sales-tax revenue in Provo means residents won't be getting a new recreation center.

More than $340,000 had been allocated for the facility, but it will now become a cushion for the city in case the budget situation worsens.

Mayor Lewis Billings says city departments have been asked to trim 1.8 percent from their budgets due to the $1.12 million sales-tax revenue shortfall. Billings says some departments are trying to cut more than requested, just in case the situation deteriorates further.
